"My mouthfill works on some dives but not others."

This is one of the most common frustrations I hear from freedivers working on deeper equalization.

The first reaction is often:

"I need to charge deeper."

Sometimes that's true.

But often the real problem is inconsistent ex*****on.

The depth is the same.

The line is the same.

The equipment is the same.

Yet one dive feels easy and the next dive feels completely different.

Why?

Because small changes in charge quality, tongue position, soft palate control, or compression can create very different results later in the dive.

A reliable mouthfill is not about making one good dive.

It's about being able to repeat the same process consistently.

That is exactly what we'll be working on in the Deep Mouthfill Workshop.

📍 Dahab, Egypt
📅 19–26 September 2026

The workshop includes:

• 6 online preparation sessions before arrival
• 5 dry sessions in Dahab
• 5 depth sessions in Dahab

Online preparation starts in August.

If you'd like more information, send me a message with the word "Mouthfill".

Many freedivers get stuck at the same depth for months or even years.

The first instinct is often to focus on the symptom:

❌ Trachea squeeze
❌ Failed mouthfill
❌ Equalization problems
❌ Anxiety at depth

But symptoms rarely tell you what the real problem is.

One of my students kept experiencing recurring trachea squeezes.

The squeeze wasn’t the problem.

After analysing his dives, we discovered the cause was hidden in a habit within his mouthfill technique. By completely changing the way he performed his mouthfill, the squeezes disappeared.

The lesson?

Progress doesn’t come from treating symptoms.

Progress comes from identifying the right cause.

Sometimes that cause is hidden in:
• Technique
• Movement patterns
• Equalization habits
• Adaptation
• Relaxation
• Mindset

And sometimes it’s something you would never have suspected.

If you keep running into the same problem again and again, ask yourself:

“Am I treating the symptom, or am I finding the cause?”

If you’d like help identifying what is actually limiting your dives, book a free coaching diagnostic call and let’s take a look together.

One of the extra workshop topics during the instructor course is how I structure training phases throughout the year.

Not every phase should look the same.

Some periods focus more on:
• strength and mobility
• aerobic work
• technique refinement

Other periods become more specific with increased water volume and depth adaptation.

And when performance matters most, recovery, quality, and mental focus become even more important.

Personally, I spend most of the year in comfortable volume phases rather than constantly pushing maximum performance.

Over the years I’ve had the chance to teach and coach many amazing students, athletes, and instructor candidates in Dahab, online, and during teaching periods in Germany, Denmark, and Crete.

From beginner courses to instructor development and equalization coaching, it has been a long journey of teaching, learning, refining, and growing as a coach myself.

I’ve finally started properly building my independent business profile for KlausSimonsenFreediving, including setting up and organizing the new Google Business profile.

For those of you who have been part of the journey over the years, and feel the experience deserves a review, it would mean a lot to me if you would like to share your experience there.

Many students think equalization problems mean they are “bad at freediving.”

Often that is not true.

In many cases, the real issue is that the foundation was never properly built before adding:
• depth
• pressure
• stress
• performance expectations

Equalization is not only about understanding a technique intellectually.

It is also:
• coordination
• timing
• pressure management
• relaxation in the water
• awareness
• motor learning

And these things usually need structured repetition and progression.

This is one reason why some students struggle in compact beginner courses when equalization already feels difficult before the course even starts.

Sometimes the best first step is not more depth.

Sometimes the best first step is slowing down and rebuilding the foundation properly.

Some people spend years struggling with equalization not because they are incapable of learning it — but because they never stay with one structured process long enough for the coordination pattern to stabilize.

Equalization is not only about understanding theory intellectually.

It is also:
• coordination
• timing
• pressure control
• relaxation under pressure
• motor learning

And this becomes even more important in the water.

Because a technique that works during dry practice can easily break down during a dive if the diver becomes tense, overfocused on depth, or starts forcing the equalization.

More exercises, more YouTube tutorials, and more “hacks” do not always create faster progress. Sometimes they create confusion, tension, and loss of trust in the process.

The goal is not to search for a magical click.
The goal is to build awareness → coordination → relaxation → consistency.

Step by step.

I’m opening a new Advanced Equalization: Mouthfill Program in Dahab.

Over the years I’ve become more and more convinced that mouthfill progression is rarely limited by “depth itself”. In most freedivers, the limiting factors are tension, timing, air management, and compensation patterns.

This program is therefore built around preparation and refinement — not rushing depth progression.

The structure includes:
• 5 weeks online preparation
• 5 online sessions
• 5 dry equalization sessions
• 5 open water sessions in Dahab

The online phase allows us to build understanding, awareness, and coordination before entering deeper pressure in the water. This creates a much calmer and more controlled learning process during the Dahab week itself.

The Dahab training week follows a 2 days on / 1 day off / 3 days on structure, allowing time for adaptation and integration between sessions.

Topics we work on include:
– Frenzel refinement
– mouthfill mechanics
– air management
– repeated charges
– awareness and relaxation
– reducing unnecessary tension and compensation

Dahab Training Week:
7–14 June

Price:
650 EUR

Send me a message if you want more information or would like to join the program.

There isn’t one “right” way to become a freediving instructor.

What matters is choosing a pathway that matches
your experience level, learning style, and long-term goals.

Some candidates are ready for an intensive format.
Others need more time, repetition, and real teaching exposure.
And some want professional development beyond certification.

That’s why I offer different instructor course formats in Dahab —
not to make it faster, but to make it solid.

Better fit → better teaching → safer instructors.

If you’re considering an instructor course and want to talk through the options,
you can book a free info call via the link in bio.
