Here are 5 fun facts about these huge ocean icons:

1. Every whale shark has a completely unique pattern of spots behind its gillsโ€”just like a human fingerprint!

2. Despite growing up to 40 feet (12+ meters) long, they exclusively eat tiny plankton, krill, and small fish.

3. They have around 3,000 tiny teeth...but don't use them to eat. Scientists believe the teeth are either evolutionary leftovers, or could help to prevent food slipping back out of their mouths.

4. Although often encountered by humans at the surface, they are capable of diving to incredible depths of over 1,970 meters

5. A single whale shark can travel thousands of miles across whole oceans - one study tracked a female whale shark migrating over 20,000km
