FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sosua - For years now, numerous people have been working tirelessly to transform the Sosua/Cabarete area into an internationally known and respected boxing destination for high-level training and competition. It all started seven years ago when Sosua Boxing Club coach Alex “Ruddy” Almonte Fernandez (a Dominican), and Hazakyah Hardy-Dia of Sosua Boxing & Fitness with Hazakyah (an Israeli) teamed up and committed to the idea. Over time, as the dream came together and others saw the potential of boxing on the North Coast several key events transpired, and in 2021, the dream became a reality.
First of all, in the last two years the international boxing community of the North Coast had been trending upwards in terms of training opportunities, and cooperation and collaboration between both instructors and students.
In July 2021, the international community combined their efforts and resources and formed the Cabarete Boxing Tribe. This caught the attention of fighters country-wide and they started participating in Cabarete Boxing Tribe activities. This in turn caught the attention of both the Puerto Plata state professional and amateur boxing associations.
In August 2021, the Puerto Plata (PP) Amateur Boxing Association made the ground-breaking decision to invite the Cabarete Boxing Tribe members to join the association in an official capacity, and to fully participate in all its activities. This led to the September 2021, establishment of the first-ever PP Amateur Boxing Association club in Cabarete.
The newly formed Cabarete Boxing Club is led by Su Incredibl of Su Boxeo, and Brian Gomes of Cabarete Boxing Academy. Both coaches are committed to boxing and helping the community. Coach Su is from New York, and Coach Brian is from Rhode Island, USA.
And finally, an up and coming boxing promotion team, Torres y Gomez, made the decision to focus on bringing high-level professional boxing competition to the North Coast where they believed there was an under-served and hungry market for boxing. And they were right. Their first North Coast boxing event was held in Puerto Plata in July 2021, and was a huge success. Their next two events are scheduled for Sosua then Cabarete.
Timing is key for boxers inside the ring, but this time an entire DR state-wide boxing community won with good timing outside the ring. As the cities of Sosua and Cabarete continue with their multi-millions of dollars remodeling, and the rebranding of themselves as 5-star world-class family destinations, boxing and other high-level sporting competitions will have a role to play.
According to GWI.com, the leading audience targeting company for the global marketing industry, boxing is a sport with impressive growth, a trend which has helped boxing become the second most popular sport among younger people globally.
The city of Sosua has given its full support and are co-sponsors of the upcoming Torres y Gomez international boxing event that will take place at the Hight Caribbean Discotec in Sosua on Saturday, 16 October 2021. Doors open at 5pm, and the first match begins at 6:30pm sharp.
Tickets prices are RD$400 general admission, RD$1000 ringside, and RD$2000 V.I.P., and are available from sponsors listed below. Due to COVID restrictions seating will be limited so people are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance.
Local boxers Riquer Louis Taveras of Sosua Boxing Club will line up against Jeff Viljean of Cabarete Boxing Club to kick the night off.
The Sosua Boxing Club is assisting Torres y Gomez Boxing Promotions. Event sponsors include the mayor of the city of Sosua the honorable Wilfredo Olivences, who’s always supporting sports; City council member Yohanna de Lancess who’s always with her people; and City council president Orlando Medina.
Sponsors also include local businesses Cheers Bar, Hight Caribbean Dicotec, Sosua Family Gym, Rancho Tipico Restaurant, Germany Bar & Grill, Banca la Primera, and restaurant Chez Montreal, compra/venta Orion, and last but not least, Metamorphosis (www.growth-change-action.net), the international education, life-coaching, counseling, and project management organization.
Sosua Boxing Club coaches Ruddy and Hazakyah strongly encourage North Coast boxers, coaches, and fans and friends to make a special effort to support those businesses that support boxing! Both coaches understand that boxing is a talent and sponsor-driven sport. One without the other is nothing but a dream half fulfilled. Their dream came to fruition because of the perfect intersection of talent and sponsors.
