Centralia, Pennsylvania sits above a coal mine fire that ignited in 1962 and never stopped. The blaze spread through abandoned anthracite tunnels beneath the borough in Columbia County, cracking the ground and venting heat. Most buildings were condemned in 1992, and only a few residents stayed behind.

The Chicago River reversal is one of the boldest engineering projects in U.S. history. Finished in 1900, the 28-mile Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal turned the river away from Lake Michigan and toward the Illinois and Mississippi rivers, protecting the city’s drinking water and opening a barge route inland. 🌊
