The Sosúa Council, influenced by local religious leaders, has made the decision to remove the underwater Goddess Atabey Statue. Shortly after this action, the ocean exhibited unprecedented turbulence, and the spirit of the Goddess manifested on the shore, resulting in powerful waves that caused significant flooding in shops, restaurants, and bars. Some divers, particularly those on cruise excursions who visit our reefs for two dives, inquire about the possibility of spearfishing lionfish. While lionfish are an invasive species, we are fortunate that their population in our area is currently low, thanks to the effective management of local fishermen.

As part of our dive briefing, we will discuss the diverse marine life that we are likely to encounter. Divers often find it interesting that the parrotfish is responsible for creating the beautiful white sand found in the Caribbean; they consume coral and excrete it as fine sand. While not everyone is familiar with the underwater signal for a seahorse, there is a consensus among divers that the angelfish family, which includes the Grey, French, and Queen angelfish, are among the most beautiful fish in the region.

The balloonfish, known for its somewhat shy nature, typically remains concealed near the ocean floor. It is a highlight for underwater photographers and divers alike. Beginner divers are beginning to appreciate the diverse range of shapes, colors, and sizes present in the underwater world. It is likely that the pirates sought refuge within the deep bay to escape the force of a strong hurricane.

During today's dives with Don and Susan, who are visiting from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, we are in search of the remnants of the old pirate shipwreck. The scattered remains of the shipwreck lie at a depth of approximately 18 meters (60 feet), and there is little left, with only the robust iron cannons still visible. Despite the limited remnants, the scuba divers express great enthusiasm upon encountering them.
