Clear water and bright sun… not always easy conditions for salmon, steelhead or seatrout ☀️

Many of us reach for smaller, more discreet flies in these situations.

Here’s a pattern that has proven itself time and time again - the Spy Fly.

Tied by Danish fly tyer Casper Hansen, this tube fly is designed for Salmon, Seatrout & Steelhead when conditions are at their toughest.

Tube fly fishing for Salmon, Seatrout & Steelhead in clear water and sunshine can be difficult to achieve success in, but often small, lightly dressed flies ...

🎣A Go-To Streamer for Big Trout in Rivers 🎣

Sculpin patterns are honestly some of the most effective flies out there if you’re targeting big trout in rivers. They push water, have a strong profile, and fish tend to hit them hard.

This Squirrel Sculpin Munker is one of those flies that just makes sense. Simple, full of movement, and really alive in the water.

In the video, Elias Kunosson ties and fishes it in his home waters up in Swedish Lapland – around Ammarnäs. It’s exactly the kind of pattern you’d want when you’re hunting bigger fish.

You can clearly see the inspiration from guys like Micke Lindström, Emil Westrin and Kim Sørensen in the overall look and feel.

If you’re into streamers, fly tying, or just Scandinavian-style patterns, this one’s definitely worth a look.

Thunder & Lightning Variant - flytying tutorial by Lars Chr. Bentsen

The Thunder and Lightning was once known as the "Great Storm fly," deriving its name from the fact that in its early days it was universally used when the water was rising after a storm. At this time the appetite of the salmon or grilse is thought to be more keen, and with the proper fly success more probable. But of late other patterns have become more valued for this state of the water, and the Thunder and Lightning is considered best to raise fish in low clear water, or for autumn fishing. In this video Lars Chr. Bendtsen ties his version of one of the most classic salmon flies - but this time on a tube.

RAW CF Baitfish by Morten Valeur

Baitfishpatterns is the key for getting in touch with the big predators lurking in the water, but when tying big streamers you often end up with a heavy and compact fly. In this video Morten Valeur from Ahrex Hooks will demonstrate some techniques to aviod that, and show one of his favorite flies for his beloved big trout streamer fishing in northern Sweden.

He says about the fly: "The RAW CF Baitfish is either tied on the TP610 for all my freshwaterfishing for big trouts, or if I fish saltwater I use the SA210 Bob Clouser Signature. The flies are weighted with the small bead from Pro Sportfisher called Pro Raw Weight that works as a bulp helping the lift of the wingmaterial, and due to the tungsten-material it really gets the fly down where the fish is lurking. The synthetic Craft Fur is beeing tied both normal and reversed for a "hollow" style, making it easy to tie a quite big fly, that is still able to cast and fish for a whole day - offcourse until a big trout disturbes the peace". And finally it is finished off with some matching Pro Cool Eyes - give it a try.

Banana & Grey for salmon and sea run brown trout - flytying tutorial by Mads Birkholt

Do you want a great fly pattern for the upcoming season for salmon and sea run brown trouts? then check this fly tying toutorial by danish flyfisher, flycaster and flytyer Mads Birkholt.
He will in this video guide you through the tying of one of his favorite patterns. Mads says about the fly: “I love the Banana fly and the Grey and Green. I found inspiration in both for this fly. The olive/banana color to match the humus color of the water, the chartreuse hot spot and both the soft fox and the spey hackle to give a lot of movement in the moderate flow of Danish rivers gives this fly a place in my fly box chasing salmon and seatrout.”

Brown Matuka - by Håkan Karsnäser

Fly fishing involves trying to imitate the fish's food on a hook, using wire, feather and hair. Many times it is about small insects in different stages, which are the main food for many fish. But larger predatory fish prefer to eat small fish and fish fry. To imitate these swaps, we usually use streamers in different designs. Many streamers consist of a body and a wing, which is a simple and often effective way to imitate small fish. However, they have a disadvantage and that is that the wing often snaps and hooks on the hook bend when you cast the fly, which means that the fly does not move correctly in the water. To remedy this, a fly was developed in New Zealand in which the wing is tied along the back, using a metal wire or tinsel. In this way, the fly got the right profile, but it was avoided that the fly moved incorrectly in the water due to the wing getting hooked. In this video Håkan Karsnäser will be demonstrating a very effectice pattern for chasing the big trouts – the Brown Matuka.

POP Zonker - by Mads Birkholt

Pink, purple and orange are successful colors for cold and colored water and especially for steelheads the colors are true classics. The Danish fly tyer and fly fisherman Mads Birkholt has used the same color theme in this nice small tube fly – Mads himself says about the fly: "When I tied The POP Zonker (Pink-Orange-Purple zonker) I had arctic char on my mind. The pink and purple colors and the orange hot spots is fantastic for arctic char and on a recent trip it did the job - it was immediately given a permanent place in the box."

The ESL Shrimp is a highly realistic and durable shrimp imitation, designed with one clear purpose: to fool sea trout.

Inspired by shrimp patterns from Kenneth Hejnfelt, Christian Krogh developed a fly that truly comes alive in the water — and keeps performing fish after fish. The ESL Shrimp can be tied in a wide range of color combinations and materials, making it easy to adapt to changing conditions and personal preferences.

Most importantly, it works. Sea trout absolutely love it.

This is one of those flies that deserves a permanent spot in your fly box, whether you’re fishing the coast or your favorite local water.

Together with the Sunray Shadow, it remains a true must-have in any serious salmon fly box.

Here’s a modern take on the classic, tied as a tube fly – keeping the soul of the original, with a contemporary twist.
