Does your horse pick you up from either side of the mounting block? It is important to be able to do things from both sides of the horse. This balances horse and rider; physically and mentally, also it makes everything simpler and more flexible. In this video I show an example of how I transfer a simple exercise from one side to the other. In a previous video I showed how he does this from the left side, now I ask him to do it from the right side. I always train new skills starting on the easiest side and let the new skills transfer to the other side. In case of an issue, I start training from the opposite side and when that side is good I transfer to the difficult side side.

Pick me up at 3 o'clock😎🐎 Did you ever ask your horse to pick you up at liberty? I tried it and this is what happened! If I can do it so can you. If you try doing this drop me a comment below🙂

This year we are rocking things up in Ride Like a Viking Members💃✨

A new feature we are testing is certified trainers holding live Q&As and getting paid for doing so!

Up next is Sara Thofte founder of Forward Horsemanship 🤩

Sara has a deep understanding of horses, that she helps others develop too, by taking the time it takes and explain what the horses are saying along the way🐴

If you want to understand your horse better and be able to ride and train at liberty, in a safe and fun way, she’s the one for you✨

What would you ask Sara about liberty?

Have you ever had a horse spooking out of 'nothing'? I think we have all experienced that. However, I say horses do not spook out of nothing, the spook is the result of tension building up, a tiny thing can be that little drop that makes the whole thing flood. Good news is there is a simple solution to this; the bend to stop. So, are you a safe rider? Do you master the bend to stop? If you want to be a safe rider I say this is the one most important thing you need to practice. When done well and with feel, there are so many benefits to the bend to stop; it helps the horse become relaxed and soft and it prevents tension from building up to a potentially dangerous spook. When training the bend to stop I focus on connection and the correct movement of the horses body. I release on a soft response and the inner hind leg stepping over. When the connection is lost I simply ask for forward and try again. In the beginning, it might take a bit of time to get it right, but once the horse knows it it is easy to repeat the exercise and make sure it is still good. When this is done on a regular basis it can be used whenever tension is building up and prevent the big spooks that seem to come out of nothing. Do you have problems with the bend to stop? Share a video in the comments below (max 3 min) and I give free advise on how to improve.

Liberty leading is all about connection & communication. But what to do when the connection is lost? Pressure is often effective but there are other options. In this example I simply move a bit and wait for him to bring his focus back on me. A few steps did the job, but if needed I would make more movement, if still not enough I would direct the motion towards his hind quarters and create pressure. Release happens when the focus I back on me -and then I go back to leading.

Have you ever heard about a horse unable to lift up it's legs? Obviously not. So why does many of us struggle lifting those legs? I say we create the problem ourselves. Pulling on the leg often starts small, but if we let go in this moment we teach the horse that pulling on the leg is how to get release. The problem escalate when we try to fix the 'problem' by pulling back on the leg. The horse is stronger and faster than us and will always win if we get into this fight. So what to do? The best thing would be to not get ourselves in this situation in the first place, but when it happens this is what I suggest. Instead of letting go/ picking up a fight simply follow the movement of the horse. Keep the pressure and wait for relaxation -then give the release by putting down the leg. This video shows and example of this. Young Skjomi is pulling on the leg, I follow him and let go when he relaxes. I try again, and this time he is fine lifting up his leg. Some times you might need to do this a couple of times but they quickly understand that relaxation is the answer -not pulling on the leg.

How do you start a riding session? At what point does the session start? I mean really start. At what point do you start considering what you do actual training? At riding, mounting, saddling grooming, leading, haltering or already from the first contact? My point is, everything we do is training, it is an opportunity to build or erode what is already established. As an example, many horses lift their legs out of obedience, not feeling comfortable and relaxed -and we might not notice. This simple exercise reveals how the horse actually feels about lifting his legs at this specific moment. The exercise: Lift up the hoof and wait for relaxation. Then put the hoof down on the 'toe' and take a deep breath before putting the hoof all the way down. The horse will only rest on the toe when relaxed; if horse is not able to do this it tells me there is tension and I can respond to this. This way I learn how the horse actually feels and the horse leans that I notice. This is a very simple way of building trust and connection😊🐴
