The way I see it, a yoga class is rather like a software download, whereas personal practice time is the software installation where you practice and repeat the things you learned in the classes until they begin to work and reveal their benefits.
If you feel at a loss regarding what to practice, here's a suggestion for a quick, all-round practice to get you started:
1. Sun Salutation (Start with a few rounds, then add more as your stamina increases)
2. A standing or seated/lying side stretch on each side.
3. A standing or seated/lying back-bend.
4. A standing or seated/lying twist.
5. A standing or seated forward-bend.
6. Savasana relaxation. (Lie on the floor and completely relax every muscle in the body for 5-10 minutes.
Experiment with various poses in different positions which feel right at the time of practice. All pose categories can easily be found online or in a yoga book of poses (Yoga asanas)
Pranayama (Breathwork)
1. Equal breathing through the nose.
Gently breathe deeper in and longer out, and make the exhalationsl the same length as the inhalation for about 5 minutes.
2. Alternative nostril breathing.
Block one nostril as you breathe in through the opposite side, then change sides as you breathe out through the other nostril. Breathe in again through the same side then change sides on the exhalation to complete a full cycle. Repeat this exercise for about 5 minutes.
Meditation.
Sit tall and relaxed on the mat or on a chair with closed eyes and lips together.
Turn the gaze softly upwards and focus on the space between the eyebrows.
Notice any light or visions you see there, or alternatively visualise a psychic symbol, such as a flame or a star.
Hold focus exclusively on your psychic symbol or inner light until it gradually begins to absorb all thoughts or distractions.
Stay with this meditation as long as comfortable, then quietly return to your usual routine.
