Arrival in Kramatorsk

I arrived the day after Bakhmut fell. I got in touch with some volunteers in the city and was welcome to work with them until my time in Ukraine was over.

My host was an american volunteer. I came by train and heard two explosions near the railway station shortly after I arrived. We were sitting on the balcony in his apartment when a fire broke out after the explosions. The fire went on for a couple of hours and more explosions followed.

I'm now back in Denmark and will regularly post stories from the three weeks I spent delivering aid to villages near the frontlines.

Ankomst til Kramatorsk

Jeg ankom dagen efter Bakhmut faldt. Jeg var kommet i kontakt med nogle frivillige i byen og var velkommen til at arbejde med dem indtil min tid i Ukraine var forbi.

Min vært var en amerikansk frivillig. Jeg kom med tog og hørte to eksplosioner nær togstationen kort efter jeg ankom. Vi sad på balkonen i hans lejlighed, da en brand brød ud som følge af eksplosionerne. Branden fortsatte i et par time og flere eksplosioner fulgte.

Jeg er nu tilbage i Danmark og kommer jævnligt til at dele historier fra de tre uger jeg brugte på at levere hjælp til landsbyerne nær frontlinjerne.

Ole from Denmark picked me up in Kyiv yesterday. He is a part of ACTT international which is a huge danish organisation. They have been transporting aid to Ukraine since the war started.
We drove a couple of hours west from Kyiv to a house in the countryside. The truck was loaded from top to bottom with clothes.

A very friendly and generous family welcomed us. They immediately served us a huge lunch and a couple of shots of homemade vodka. Everybody helped unloading the truck, so the job was quickly finished. We afterwards got a quick lesson in how to make vodka at home.

This wonderful family will definitely be busy for the next couple of days sorting out the clothes for transports to the east.

Ole fra Danmark samlede mig op i Kyiv igår. Han er den del af ACTT international, som er en stor dansk organisation. De har transporteret hjælp til Ukraine, siden krigen startede. Vi kørte et par timer vest fra Kyiv til et hus ude på landet. Lastbilen var fyldt til randen med tøj.

En meget venlig og generøs familie bød os velkomne. De bød med det samme på en stor frokost og et par hjemmelavede vodka shots. Alle hjalp flittigt med at tømme lastbilen, så det var hurtigt klaret. Efterfølgende fik vi en hurtig lektion i at lave vodka derhjemme.

Denne vidunderlige familie får garanteret travlt de næste dage med at sortere tøjet til transporter østpå.

The truck from Germany didn't arrive as soon as we hoped, but Michael got in touch with an organisation in Baia Mare, Romania. They allowed us to drop by and fill up the car with food and clothes. We then dropped it off in Lviv where I spent a couple of days with a friend of Michael before heading towards Kyiv in order to join a danish organisation for another transport.

We saw a rather strange traffic sign on the way into Lviv. I do have a drivers license for truck, so I understand the individual meaning of the signs. But that mix doesn't seem to make any sense.

Lastbilen fra Tyskland lader vente på sig, men Michael fik kontakt til en organisation i Baia Mare i Rumænien. De lod os komme forbi og fylde bilen med mad og tøj. Derefter afleverede vi det i Lviv, hvor jeg tilbragte et par dage med en ven af Michael, før jeg tog til Kyiv for at slutte mig til en dansk organisation til en anden transport.

Vi så et ret mærkeligt vejskilt på vej ind i Lviv. Jeg har kørekort til lastbil, så jeg forstår den individuelle betydning af skiltene. Men dét mix ser ikke ud til at give mening.

We are back in Romania after my first trip to Kharkiv. We aren't in a lack of donations in terms of aid. We are currently waiting for a huge truck from Germany. The load also has to be transported eastwards and that is expensive. We are driving approximately 12 km/l when the car is loaded and the ride to and from Kharkiv is approximately 3.000 km. Michael often faces problems making ends meet due to the high gas expenses. We are currently splitting all expenses between us, so it makes his situation a touch better. I would like to go eastwards as many times as possible while I'm here. That's why I came. Preferably without being completely ruined when I return home though.

Støt vores arbejde i Ukraine.

Vi er tilbage i Rumænien efter min første tur til Kharkiv. Der mangler ikke donationer i form af nødhjælp. Lige nu venter vi på en stor lastbil fra Tyskland. Læsset skal dog også transporteres østpå og det er dyrt. Vi kører cirka 12 kilometer på literen, når bilen er fyldt og turen til og fra Kharkiv er cirka 3.000 km. Michael har ofte problemer med at få enderne til at mødes grundet de høje udgifter til benzin. Lige nu deler vi alle udgifter imellem os, så det er et plaster på såret for ham. Jeg vil gerne køre så mange gange østpå som muligt imens jeg er her. Det er derfor jeg kom herned. Dog helst uden at være fuldstændig ruineret, når jeg kommer hjem.

Destruction in Kharkiv.

More buildings like those are created today - it seems like big parts of Ukraine will be hit. A mother and her small child has already been killed in Uman and there's most likely gonna be more victims during the day...

Attacks are today targeting Kyiv for the first time in 51 days. 11 missiles over Kyiv has been shot down by the Ukrainian air defence this morning.

Flere bygninger som disse bliver skabt idag - det ser ud til at store dele af Ukraine kommer til at blive ramt. En mor og hendes lille barn er allerede blevet dræbt i Uman og der komme formentlig flere ofre i løbet af dagen...

Kyiv bliver idag angrebet for første gang i 51 dage. 11 missiler er blevet skudt ned over Kyiv af det ukrainske forsvar her til morgen.

We arrived in Kharkiv yesterday where we dropped off our load of donations. Everything seems completely normal apart from the air sirenes. Streets are full of people enjoying the good weather. It was a bit surreal when taking the fact that the frontlines are 30 kilometres away into consideration.

We are now heading back to Kyiv where we will spend the night before the last stretch to Romania.

Vi ankom til Kharkiv igår, hvor vi afleverede vores last af donationer. Alt virker fuldstændigt normalt, bortset fra luftsirenerne. Gaderne er fulde af folk, som er ude for at nyde det gode vejr. Det var lidt surrealistisk, når man tænker på at frontlinjen er blot 30 kilometer væk.

Vi er nu på vej tilbage til Kyiv, hvor vi tilbringer natten før det sidste stræk til Rumænien.

I'm now in Sighetu Marmatiei in Romania right next to the Ukrainian border where Michael is renting a house. That's our "headquarter" where we store donations for the transports to the east. Today we received two cars full of donations from Germany. Then we went briefly into Ukraine to pick up five refugees coming from Kramatorsk at the train station. They are now on their way to Germany with the people who brought the donations. They are finally safe.

The house also work as an adoptioncenter for straydogs. Emma from Romania and Michael are currently looking after four puppies until they are old enough for adoption.

Jeg er nu i Sighetu Marmatiei i Rumænien lige ved siden af den ukrainske grænse, hvor Michael lejer et hus. Det er vores "hovedkvarter", hvor vi opbevarer donationer til transporterne mod øst. Idag ankom to biler fulde af donationer fra Tyskland. Derefter kørte vi kortvarigt ind i Ukraine for at hente fem flygtninge fra Kramatorsk på togstationen. De er nu på vej til Tyskland med folkene som kom med donationerne. De er endelig i sikkerhed.

Huset fungerer også som adoptionscenter for gadehunde. Emma fra Rumænien og Michael har lige nu fire hundehvalpe boende, indtil de er gamle nok til adoption.

Long story short. I’ve been struggling with minor knee problems since the beginning of my bicycle trip in may 2022. It didn’t really get worse until I reached Africa. I decided to quit my trip in order to avoid a potential injury. It seems like I have a bit of fluid in both of my knees.

So now I’ve decided to replace my cycling trip with something more meaningful. I’m now in Ukraine where I’ll meet up with Michael. We met at the Ukrainian - Romanian border last year. He is still in Ukraine transporting food supplies and refugees. I decided to join him until the middle of June. It’ll also be possible to support our work. Pictures will come as soon as I have more than just a picture of my stamp.

Lang historie kort. Jeg har bøvlet med mindre knæ problemer siden starten på min cykeltur i maj 2022. Det blev ikke rigtigt værre, indtil jeg nåede Afrika. Jeg besluttede mig for at stoppe turen for at undgå en potentiel skade. Det tyder på, at jeg har en lille smule væske i begge knæ.

Så nu har jeg besluttet at bytte min cykeltur ud med noget mere meningsfyldt. Jeg er nu i Ukraine, hvor jeg skal mødes med Michael. Vi mødte hinanden ved den ukrainsk - rumænske grænse sidste år. Han er stadig i Ukraine, hvor han transporterer madforsyninger og flygtninge. Jeg kører med ham indtil midten af juni. Det kommer også til at være muligt at støtte vores arbejde. Der kommer billeder så snart jeg har mere end blot et billede af mit stempel.

Denmark --> Cape Town by bicycle!

Tricky situation in Burundi

I cycled to the Burundian border from Rwanda. According to information online, I could get a 30 days visa on arrival. When I showed up at the border, I was told that the only option was a 3 days transit visa. My plan was to cross the country from north to south, but that wasn't possible anymore due to the time constraints. They stamped my passport and printed out my transitvisa. I looked at my map and found another border to Tanzania from the eastern part of Burundi. Allegedly it should be possible for me to get a visa on arrival at any Tanzanian border. That was the new plan.

It took me three days to get to the border. The last 50 kilometres from the city of Cankuzo was definitely some of the toughest cycling I've ever done. Horrible road conditions and steep uphills.

There was bad news at the border. The Tanzanian authorities couldn't give me a visa on arrival due to lack of facilities. The Burundian authorities was aware that my visa was expiring the same day, so they offered to drive me 250 kilometres to Bujumbura - the capital of Burundi. It should be possible to get my visa extended there. It sounded like a good plan until they told me the price. They wanted 400$ for the service!! I got furious and left the place immediately. I was now in Burundi illegally.

I cycled the same 50 kilometres back to Cankuzo. It got dark, so I had to pitch my tent on the way. I decided to stick to my old plan and ride to the southernmost border 60 kilometres from Kigoma in Tanzania and try to find an "unofficial" way to solve the problem when arriving at the Burundian border.

There is a lot of police on the roads in Burundi. I passed approximately 20 checkpoints every day. Luckily I was only stopped once and they didn't notice that my visa was expired.

I reached the border two days ago after overstaying five days. Worst case scenario was being detained, so I was a little bit nervous. The two border guards looked through my passport and my visa. They ended up stamping me out without asking any questions. 'Transit visa' was specifically written on my visa. I would either get in trouble or have to bribe them if they were aware of the rules of their own country.

I was fortunate to meet some very friendly and welcoming people in this rural part of Burundi.

Now I'm relaxing in Kigoma, Tanzania before cycling on towards Zambia.

Jeg cyklede til den Burundiske grænse fra Rwanda. Ifølge information på nettet kunne jeg få et 30 dages visum ved ankomst. Da jeg dukkede op ved grænsen, fik jeg dog at vide at den eneste mulighed var et 3 dages transitvisum. Min oprindelige plan var at krydse landet fra nord til syd, men det var ikke længere muligt grundet tidsbegrænsningerne. De stemplede mit pas og printede mit transitvisum ud. Jeg kiggede på kortet og fandt en anden grænse til Tanzania fra den østlige del af Burundi. Angiveligt burde det være muligt for mig at få et visum ved ankomst ved alle landegrænser til Tanzania. Det var den nye plan.

Det tog mig tre dage at nå frem til grænsen. De sidste 50 kilometer fra byen Cankuzo var uden tvivl noget af det hårdeste cykling jeg nogensinde har kørt. Forfærdelige veje og stejle opstigninger.

Der var dårligt nyt ved grænsen. De Tanzanianske myndigheder kunne ikke give mig et visum ved ankomst grundet manglende faciliteter. De Burundiske myndigheder var klar over at mit visum udløb samme dag, så de tilbød at køre mig 250 kilometer til Bujumbura - Burundis hovedstad. Dér skulle det være muligt at få en visumforlængelse. Det lød som en udemærket plan, indtil de fortalte mig prisen. De ville have 400$ for dén service!! Jeg var rasende og forlod straks stedet. Jeg var nu illegalt i Burundi.

Jeg cyklede de samme 50 kilometer tilbage til Cankuzo. Det blev mørkt, så jeg slog mit telt op undervejs. Jeg besluttede at holde mig til min gamle plan og cykle til den sydligste grænse 60 kilometer fra Kigoma i Tanzania og forsøge at finde en "uofficiel" måde at løse problemet, når jeg nåede frem til den Burundiske grænse.

Der er meget politi på vejen i Burundi. Jeg passerede omtrent 20 checkpoints hver dag. Heldigvis blev jeg kun stoppet én gang og de lagde ikke mærke til, at mit visum var udløbet.

Jeg nåede grænsen for to dage siden efter fem dage for meget i Burundi. Det værste scenarie var at blive tilbageholdt, så jeg var en lille smule nervøs. De to grænsevagter kiggede mit pas og visum igennem. De endte med at stemple mig ud uden at stille spørgsmål. 'Transit visum' stod specifikt skrevet på mit visum. Jeg ville enten havne i problemer eller bestikke dem, hvis de var bekendte med reglerne i deres eget land.

Jeg mødte dog nogle fantastisk venlige og imødekommende mennesker på disse øde veje i "Udkantsburundi"

Nu slapper jeg af i Kigoma i Tanzania, før jeg fortsætter mod Zambia.
