Match reports from KH Mens EuroHockey adventure.
KH v Mladost
KH began their Eurohockey adventure against HAHK Mladost on a warm day in Slovenia.
The boys in blue and white started brightly and put early pressure on the team from Croatia, with a chance for Frieder Voigt created by the hard work by Jesper Steemann in midfield.
In a frenetic opening quarter KH spurned other chances and unfortunately Mdlost took advantage by opening the scoring from close range.
KH's response to going a goal down was impressive, as in both the 2nd and 3rd quarters they worked hard to thwart Mladost's attackers, whilst creating some quality chances of their own.
Fabi Van Oevelen came close after good approach play by Juan Darimont and was only denied by an amazing save by the Croatian goal keeper.
A few minutes later KH hit the post and were feeling like an equalizer was coming but, at the start of the final quarter of the game Mladost hit KH on the break to make it 0-2
Again KH reacted well to a disappointment and within minutes had created the pressure which led to another outstanding save from Mladost's Goalie (who won GK of the tournament) but, resulted in a penalty stroke for KH, from which which Dr. Tobias Grand opened KH's goal account with a clinical strike.
Despite another good chance for KH from a penalty corner, it was Mladost who again hit KH on the break in the final minutes of the game to make the final score 1-3.
KH v Epitok
KH's encounter with Hungarian champions Epitok was a tense, combative affair with KH suffering from an indiscipline which hampered their efforts to win the game.
KH started well and in the ninth minute Dr. Grand doubled his tournament goal tally from close range, after good work down the right by KH's captain Rasmus Mundeling.
Epitok took advantage in the second quarter, with KH suffering a player in time out the Hungarians forced the pace, won a penalty corner and scored to make it 1-1.
In the second half of the game KH were reduced by further green and yellow card sanctions which gave Epitok the desire to push forward and create chances.
All of KH's defensive unit met the challenge with gusto, with GK Jonas Hessvig making some important saves to keep KH in the game.
KH had a chance to win the game in the final minutes of the game but, were denied by a good save to make the final score 1-1.
KH v Furuset
KH demanded more from themselves for Sunday's game against Furuset and were rewarded with a performance they had been hoping for.
Despite not scoring in the opening 15 minutes the chances KH created were down to the hard work of KH's midfield, with Adam Montgomery, Jesper Steemann, Niklas Dunham and Juan Dairmont running their socks off to find an opening for KH.
In the 2nd quarter the pressure told and KH scored 4 times, with Tobias Grand (Dr.)
converting a penalty corner, a first EuroHockey goal for Frieder Voigt, a strike of real quality by KH's Christian Møller and a devastating penalty corner conversion by Dani Portugal that left the Norwegian champions reeling.
Furuset rallied after half time and it took the combined efforts of KH's defenders to keep the team from Oslo at bay, with Armin Bundle and Jan Kuijken both showing a calm authority to keep the Norwegians from scoring.
In the final quarter KH's press was too much for Furuset and Frieder Voigt got his second goal before Fabi Van Oevelen made it 6-0 to cap a rewarding match for the lads from København.
KH v HK Triglav Predanovci
KH's final match saw them take on the Slovenian host team HK Triglav Predanovci, in a game that would decide who would win a coveted promotion spot and the Slovenian's fans created a febrile atmosphere in their desire for a home win.
KH knew an early goal would dampen the spirits of the home crowd and were quick to pressure the hosts from the opening whistle.
Copenhagen's finest were rewarded for starting well when they were awarded a penalty stroke in the fourth minute from which KH's Grand (Dr.) surgically dispatched into the corner of the host's goal.
KH kept applying pressure and created more opportunities, with the irrepressible Fabi Van Oevelen coming close to doubling the Danes lead. The lads in blue and white didn't have to wait long before again unlocking the Slovenians defense when a flowing move, began by Morten Pedersen, allowed the space for Adam Montgomery to combine with Fabi Van Oevelen whose incredible pass created the opportunity for Thor Gissing to score his first EuroHockey goal for KH and enjoy an extremely happy goal celebration with his team mates.
At halftime KH's coaching team asked for defensive resilience, predicting the home team would raise their game and be more attack minded after the break.
The Slovenians took until the 38th minute for their pressure to tell, securing a penalty corner from which, despite KH's goalkeeper Jonas Hesslevig's good initial save, they scored with a well taken strike from the rebound.
In the fourth quarter it's fair to say both teams had an opportunity to win the game, with Tobias (Dr.) Grand and Thor Gissing having good chances for KH but, it was KH's midfield and defenders who really shone, with relentless running from Nicklas Dunham, brave tackles from Dani Portugal and an amazing goal line clearance from Jan Kuijken thwarting the home sides chances of getting an equalizing goal.
After playing hard for 60 minutes in 32 degree heat the final whistle was a glorious sound and KH celebrated as a collective of players happy for each others success and proud for their part in winning a coveted promotion for KH.
Captain Mundeling insisted that both KH players and staff allowed themselves a couple of celebratory Laško sodas in Zagreb later that evening, before returning home and focusing on their home fixture against Gentofte HK this Sunday at 1500.
FORZA KH!
