Less Plastic Waste at the 2024 Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Championships Thanks to GrønBlå 👏🌈
At the 2024 Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Ballerup Super Arena, a significant step toward sustainable event management was taken with a reduction in plastic waste. Thanks to GrønBlå’s innovative use of compostable serviceware, plastic waste was markedly reduced, thereby lessening the event’s overall environmental footprint.
Over just five days of competition, GrønBlå reports that 1.5 tons of plastic and 630 kg of plastic-coated paper products were diverted from the waste stream. These products would typically have been incinerated or recycled through environmentally harmful processes. Instead, the compostable materials were converted into nutrient-rich compost, which can give back to nature.
Not all materials from the event could be composted immediately due to non-compostable items introduced by external sources, but GrønBlå is well on its way to optimizing the process. GrønBlå’s efforts demonstrate how large events can reduce environmental impact through innovative, sustainable solutions, and the Danish Cycling Federation is proud to have a partner helping us reduce plastic waste 🫶
