Dear friends,
You might have guessed it by now, but there will not be a Cirque du Solo festival this year. The pandemic is not over yet and though it is theoretically possible and events are happening again, we decided to sit this one out.
The last year has been a handful and, next to the health pandemic and the global climate crisis, also the political situation makes us question many things. The continuing systemic opression based on race and gender has been made very obvious and we fully stand behind the protests that have happened and hopefully continue to happen until there is meaningful and sustained change within the society and its leadership.
We do want to come back with a dance festival here in Berlin, but we want to do some deep reflection on what Cirque du Solo has meant and means for us, what we want it to be in the future and how we can do our best to honor the African-American culture in which we as Jazz and Lindy Hop dancers are guest and to give back and contribute to a more inclusive and healthier community.

We are back with our walk down memory lane...
And we have just passed the half-way milestone! We are in Cirque du Solo 2015 and this year our biggest challenge was big Sunday Show in the Admiralspalast Berlin. It was bigger than all our former shows and we had almost 300 guests in the audience! Also, working with Clément - Art.Photography.Berlin - as a photographer we have a loooot of great photos from the show and the other evenings. You can find all of them in our gallery, but here is a little selection as a slide show, underlaid with the soundtrack of Time Rag Department - The Roamer Street Rag Band (If you Knew), who was also the band for our Saturday Ball in 2015

"I'm so glad that you're here, at Cirque du Solo! Cirque du Solooo!!!"

The cast of this edition all somehow had a profound attraction in singing.
The creative forum of Cirque du Solo allowed us to get the idea to simply integrate it in the teacherdemo.
Talked to Shirt Tail Stompers bandleader Steven Coombe and backstage, new lyrics were cooked upon the tune 'You Rascal You'.
The Result was an exciting, never-done-before way of introducing the Weekend! A must see!

Cirque du Solo took a big leap in 2013, renting former silent-movie theater Delphi - now Theater im Delphi - one of Berlin’s most iconic locations from the 1920s that remained closed for many decades until then. Cirque du Solo was one of the first big events happening there over three nights - with the Cabaret with its amazing acts being the highlight, that Juan Migama and Mad Oli created with much love and moderated, spending several months on its preparation and rehearsing. This video clip, cut by Juan Mi, shows only a few of the highlights.

In 2012 we had our cabaret for the first time in a theater; the Acker Stadt Palast. Performing a teachers’ show was decided spontaneously at the beginning of the weekend and JoYsS choreographed it “on the spot”, based on “West Side Story”. So besides organizing and teaching, we also managed to squeeze in two rehearsals for the performance. You can enjoy a bit of that in the video :)

The first edition of Cirque du Solo featured two very distinct personalities of the European Jazz scene: JoYsS, sought after for his modern influences from Hip Hop and other Street Dance styles; and Joris, known for his special and artistic clown character. They both share a love for the theater and performance; inspiring the theme and the title for this event and giving Cirque du Solo its unique identity.

We are sad to let you know that this year’s event is cancelled.

While a Solo Jazz workshop seemed to be easier to manage at first, we believe it’s still too risky to have people traveling and joining parties… both the financial burden for the smaller number of participants we could allow, as well as the health risks for the event are too large.

We are planning on having Cirque du Solo again – and celebrate our 10th anniversary – on November 19-21, 2021!

Also we’re planning a Cirque du Solo online alternative on our platform swingstep.tv to support the teachers. More information will follow soon!
