Pünktlich zum 40 jährigen Jubiläum des DUCKDALBEN International Seamen's Club erreicht uns ein neuer Dalben. Die Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) hat extra für uns diesen Dalben anfertigen lassen.
So ein Dalben ist ein Stück echte Handwerkskunst. Normalerweise trotzen diese im Hafenboden eingeranmten Holzkolosse der Witterung und den Gezeiten. Viele Jahre dienen die Pfähle dem Festmachen von Schiffen oder markieren die Fahrrinne.
Da hat es unser neuer Dalben ein bisschen leichter an seinem Standort bei uns im Hafen. Er steht zumindest dann trocken, wenn es in Hamburg mal nicht regnet. 😉
Dieser Dalben ist von den letzten Dalbenbauenden im Hamburger Hafen extra für uns angefertigt worden. Ganz herzlichen Dank an die HPA und alle am Projekt beteiligten. Es ist uns eine Ehre dieses Geschenk anlässlich unseres 40 jährigen Jubiläums erhalten zu haben!

Was soll ich sagen? DUCKDALBEN ohne Dithmarscher ist wie Hamburg ohne Regen - super schön, aber nicht so authentisch.
Anlässlich unseres runden Geburtstages überreichte Stefan Hemmer von Dithmarscher eine Ehrenurkunde an Clubleitung Eliane Lafendt. Passend dazu gab es eine Flasche Dithmarscher Festbier. Ganz herzlichen Dank!

Warum heißen wir denn jetzt als International Seamen's Club eigentlich DUCKDALBEN?
Irgendwie ganz einfach und doch steckt mehr dahinter als man vielleicht denkt:
So wie im Hafen die Schiffe am Dalben Festmachen können oder durch den Dalben sicher die Fahrerinne queren können, bieten wir einen Punkt zum Festmachen und Sicherheit für Seeleute.
Egal wie stürmisch der Alltag an Bord gerade ist, bei uns dürfen Seeleute Mensch sein, ankommen, entspannen und verweilen - Festmachen.
Ist der Weg vielleicht mal nicht ganz so gut sichtbar, sind wir da und hören zu, bieten Beratung und Hilfe - markieren einen Fahrweg.
Ihr merkt, unser Name ist nicht nur irgendwie daher gedacht, sondern hat eine Bedeutung. Der Name ist bei uns Programm, bekannt in vielen Teilen der Welt.

Just in time for the 40th anniversary of the DUCKDALBEN International Seamen’s Club, a new dolphin has arrived. The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) has built this dolphin especially for us.
A dolphin like this is a true piece of craftsmanship. Normally, these wooden colossi, driven into the harbour seabed, brave the elements and the tides. For many years, the piles are used to moor ships or mark the navigation channel.
Our new dolphin has it a bit easier in its location here in our harbour. At least it stays dry when it’s not raining in Hamburg. 😉
This dolphin was specially crafted for us by the last remaining dolphin-builders in the Port of Hamburg. A huge thank you to the HPA and everyone involved in the project. It is an honour for us to have received this gift to mark our 40th anniversary!
There’s our new dolphin! It’s already serving as a photo opportunity for the next brilliant anniversary present.
What can I say? DUCKDALBEN without Dithmarscher is like Hamburg without rain – absolutely lovely, but not quite as authentic.
To mark our milestone anniversary, Stefan Hemmer from Dithmarscher presented a certificate of honour to club chair Eliane Lafendt. To go with it, there was a bottle of Dithmarscher Festbier. Thank you very much indeed!
What would the DUCKDALBEN be without its famous swing-top bottles? Cheers to the next 40 years!

So why is the International Seamen’s Club actually called DUCKDALBEN?
In English, it’s a bit more complicated, as ‘Dalben’ becomes ‘Dolphin’. Sometimes, though, ‘Dalben’ is understood as well, and then there’s our duck ‘Ducky’ as our mascot.
Just as ships in the harbour can moor at the dolphin or safely navigate the channel via the dolphin, we offer a place for seafarers to moor and feel safe.
No matter how stormy daily life on board may be at the moment, with us seafarers can simply be themselves, find a place to settle, relax and linger – moor.
If the way forward isn’t quite so clear at times, we’re there to listen, offer advice and help – marking out a course.
As you can see, our name isn’t just a random choice, but has real meaning. The name says it all, and we’re known in many parts of the world.
