We train students to reach for the exact word, then watch them freeze when it won't come. One missing noun and the whole sentence stops.

But proficient speakers forget words constantly. They just don't stop. They say "the thing you open tins with," and the conversation carries on.

That's the skill worth teaching. Not a bigger vocabulary list, but what to do in the gap.

Describe it, talk around it, swap in a simpler word. Keep going.

Your student doesn't need every word. She needs to not fall silent when one goes missing.

We over-prepare to feel safe. The neat plan, the timed stages, the worksheet that ties it all together. It's more of a comfort blanket than a lesson.

Then the student says something halfway through that matters more than anything you'd planned, and the good trainer drops the plan to follow it.

That's where the real lesson was hiding. In the thing she actually struggles with, not the thing you decided to teach on a Tuesday evening.

Bring a rough shape, not a script. Leave room to chase what comes up. The plan is for you. The lesson is for her.

We think we're helping when we catch everything. Every article, every preposition, every slip. We're being thorough.

What the student hears is a steady drip of "wrong, wrong, wrong."

Most of those errors cost nothing. The room understood her. The meaning got through. Correcting them anyway just teaches her that speaking English means being watched for mistakes.

Pick the one that actually changed what she meant. Let her fix that. Leave the rest.

She'll talk more when she stops bracing for the next correction. And the talking is what fixes the small stuff anyway.

A boring lesson is nearly always a quiet student and a talking trainer. You explain, you model, you fill the gaps. They nod. The clock crawls.

Flip who's doing the work. Ask the question and wait through the awkward pause instead of rescuing it. Get them building the sentence, not watching you build it.

The energy in a room comes from the person doing the talking, and right now that's you.

One of the best teaching habits I've built:

I keep a swipe file of real mistakes from English learners.

Not to point out errors. To spot patterns.

When the same mistake shows up again and again, it tells me exactly what needs more practice, clearer explanations or better examples.

Over time, that file becomes more useful than any textbook.

Your students' mistakes are data. Pay attention to them.

The ones who improve fastest aren't the careful ones. They're the ones who'll risk a clumsy sentence and notice the room doesn't end.

Your job isn't to keep them from getting it wrong. It's to make getting it wrong feel safe enough to do again.

Listen to how you start speaking English in a room full of people.
"Sorry, my English is not so good."
"Sorry, maybe this is wrong."
You've apologised twice before you've said anything worth apologising for.
The accent isn't what makes people doubt you. The apology is.

Nobody in that meeting is grading your vowels.
They're waiting to understand what you mean.
A clear sentence in an obvious German accent gets through every time.
