What an incredible story: Originally, the BITURBO wheelset was meant to be a one-of piece, built by Christian Gemperlein for his diploma thesis project. Now his company, Bike Ahead, is celebrating its 15th anniversary. 😃 BITURBO wheels have helped win World Championship gold, the legendary Cape Epic, and the Badlands Ultra-Gravel Race. And the story of the BITURBO wheelset is far from over.

Christian has been fascinated by MTB technology since childhood — especially carbon parts. With his diploma thesis, he fulfilled his big dream. The title of the thesis: „Development, construction, FEM calculation, and construction of a CFRP composite wheel for mountain bikes.”

The six-spoke wheel was built in a monocoque style. The design looked like a turbine. That's why it was named BITURBO.

In 2011, Christian founded Bike Ahead. That was the start of an incredible story. Today, we are a manufacturer with 40 employees. The portfolio ranges from wheels to complete bikes. Everything is handmade in Germany. The BITURBO is still the star of the lineup. This year, a 32-inch version was presented.

We’re celebrating our 15th anniversary. Over the next few weeks, we have a few great surprises in store for you! 😃 What a story! From a six-spoke carbon wheel that started as a thesis project to a manufacturer of high-end carbon bikes and parts made in Germany. 👉 We’ll take you on a journey into the Bike Ahead universe. What is it? 29-inch, or 32-inch? Yes, it’s 32 inches. You have to look twice, because the proportions are so perfect. 😃

Editor Jan from .magazin is a tall guy. His 29er felt a bit like a kids’ bike to him. That’s why Jan has now built his dream bike with 32-inch wheels. The name: Leovelo Goliath. Wow, what a beauty made of steel and carbon full of amazing details. We’re thrilled to be part of the project.

Jan built the BITURBO X 32 SAFEWING wheels here in our workshop. Okay, not entirely. But he was part of the manufacturing process and wrote a great article about it for BIKE Magazine. 🔥

A gravel bike like no other: The 32-inch titanium gravel bike from French manufacturer is a blast to ride. Weighing just 9.00 kg, it handles rough terrain with ease. 😃

The frameset and the Bike Ahead parts form a symbiotic unit.

The BITURBO X 32 Safewing wheels were developed specifically for the new wheel size. The layup makes them laterally stiff and comfortable. Weight: 1496 g.

How does a 32-inch bike ride? Or THE SUPERFAST, our innovative, super-light gravel bike? 😃

It was a full house at the Bike Ahead and Stoll Bikes test day last Saturday. An exclusive opportunity to test brand-new products. The stage-winning Stoll P32 bike. Or the Bike Ahead BITURBO X 32 Safewing wheels. All handmade in Germany. During the factory tour, everyone could see the passion and expertise that go into creating these parts. 🔥

Bike Ahead and Stoll Bikes have a long-standing partnership. All frames from the Swiss premium brand are produced in Würzburg.

Thanks to everyone who came to the test event. It was a great day!

Starting before sunrise with lights, 325 kilometers full speed: THE TRAKA, a brutally long gravel race with 3,700 meters of elevation gain in Spain/Girona, is one of the toughest gravel races on the planet. Perfect for THE SUPERFAST. 😃

Ruben Zepuntke rode a strong race on it. For the time trial and Ironman specialist, it was his first gravel race. For the first four hours, he rode furiously at the front. Then he had to pay the price for the high pace. His finish time: 11:32 hours. A great gravel debut for Ruben. And THE SUPERFAST? It passed the challenge without any problems. 🔥

A true hardcore test for THE FRAME 32: The Ronda Extrema at the legendary Bike Marathon Lake Garda. 83 kilometers and 3,400 meters of climbing. Super-steep, endless uphills. Brutal downhills. Rough terrain. One of the toughest marathon races. 😃

The bike passed the test perfectly. Rollover performance and grip: Superb. And yes, the 9.5-kilo Hardtail was agile, even in tight turns.
Our THE FRAME 32 was the only 32-inch bike in the race. We’re excited to see more of them in long-distance races.
