WHY THE RIGHT SIDE FIRST?

In many bilateral standing poses—
Trikoṇāsana.
Utthita Pārśvakoṇāsana.
Vīrabhadrāsana I and II.
Parivṛtta Trikoṇāsana.
—the right side is commonly taught first.

A new student once asked:
“Is it simply tradition, or is there a reason?”

The most honest answer may be: both tradition and method.

Beginning consistently on one side brings order to the practice. It allows the teacher to guide a group clearly and gives the student a familiar sequence through which both sides can be observed.

Does the second side feel steadier?
Does the breath change?
Does the body understand the action more clearly after learning it once?

Traditional yoga also associates the right side with Piṅgalā—the solar channel, symbolically connected with warmth, activity and dynamism.

The left is associated with Iḍā—the lunar channel, connected with coolness, receptivity and stillness.

These belong to the yogic understanding of the subtle body. They are not anatomical explanations.

Perhaps the value of beginning on the right does not lie in one final theory.

Perhaps it lies in what repetition teaches:
The same side first.
The same actions revisited.
A different body each day.

Next time you enter Trikoṇāsana, observe what the first side teaches the second.

💬 What instruction from your teacher only became clear through years of practice?

We read every response.

🚨 Geplantes Tierversuchsgesetz bedroht den Tierschutz 🚨
Wir schlagen Alarm und brauchen eure Unterschriften!

‼️Petition: www.stoppt-das-tierversuchsgesetz.de ‼️

Jetzt unterschreiben!

“The pose everyone rushes.”

In Surya Namaskar, Chaturanga Daṇḍāsana is often the pose that disappears.

From Adho Mukha Svanasana to Urdhva Mukha Svanasana
in half a breath.

The body drops.
The elbows flare.
The lower back sags.

And the pose itself —
the one that builds the arms, the core, the discipline —
is never really entered.

We rush it because it is hard.
We rush it because the next pose is calling.
We rush it because nobody told us to stay.

But in Iyengar Yoga,
every transition is a pose.

Timing.

A Chaturanga held for three full breaths
is a different pose entirely
from one passed through in half a second.

B.K.S. Iyengar said:
“Action is movement with intelligence.”

Not movement with momentum.
Not movement with speed.

Movement with intelligence.
That means the lowering is deliberate.
The elbows track back, not out.
The body is one straight staff —
four limbs, one line, no sagging.

The chest does not arrive before the hips.
The hips do not arrive before the chest.

The whole body arrives together.

At BKS Iyengar Yogashala, Kuala Lumpur
Chaturanga is taught from the ground up.

Knees-down first.
Then full.

Props under the chest when needed.
The line is built before the strength is demanded.
Because a rushed Chaturanga teaches the shoulders to compensate.
A slow one teaches the body to work as one unit.

So the next time you move through Surya Namaskar, ask yourself:
Am I doing Chaturanga —
or just passing through it?

💬 What is one pose you have been rushing that deserves more time?
We read every one.

Hab ein wunder-volles Wochenende 🌞💗

Just as a seed cannot be forced to sprout or bread rushed to bake, the nervous system requires uninterrupted stillness and time.

Based on decades of therapeutic observation, B. K. S. Iyengar taught that restoration has a gestation period.

20 minutes in Viparita karni: the benefits

BODY
-Fuller fluid drainage from the legs and feet reducing swelling and tiredness ( you can do leg variations)
-hips, and lower back and neck fully release, as muscles start to relax
-heart rate slows down as the venous blood flows along with gravity, accumulates in pelvic region and slowly trickles to the heart

BREATH
-Due to the chin lock (jalandar bandha) breathing naturally slows and deepens, exhalations become longer & smoother
-Diaphragmatic breathing becomes easier since the body is fully supported
-Slower breath rate itself feeds back into calming the nervous system — it’s a two-way loop

NERVOUS SYSTEM
-20 minutes is long enough for a fuller parasympathetic shift
-Cortisol (stress hormone) tends to drop more with longer holds than short ones
-you experience a meditative state similar to the effect of early-stage relaxation or light meditation
-Heart rate variability (a marker of nervous system balance) often improves with sustained stillness like this

Caution : eye issues, BP, menstruation

Do practice under the guidance of a teacher
