Receiving 受身and being a ‘good uke’ requires skill and an understanding of Sutemi ( sacrifice ) to maintain one’s equilibrium and survival in times of change. The essence is found in Taihenjutsu 体変術 ( body change techniques) and ultimately the Kokoro 心 ( heart ) of the martial artist.

Shinden 心伝 is often referred to as spiritual or heartfelt connection and transmission. Trust and sincerity is of course an essential part. Without trust, the depth of the transmissions from your teacher will merely brush the surface. In a sense, you must accept to be cut and feel the blade over your beating heart. This is 忍.
The cold steel against the warmth of your veins can be appreciated as a moment of life before death, and thus a chance for a flash of self awakening or enlightenment. The teacher offers you the chance to find and follow the truth of budo by constantly stretching your limits both physically and mentally. Between the painful twists and strikes, the boring and hurtful times, we must remember to keep our hearts open. The teacher only offers hard training to those who seriously seek the path of true martial arts, and at times it seems he/she is cold and harsh. But then, before or after training we talk, we drink, we eat, we laugh, and we communicate simply from the heart. This perceived polarity is like in/yo ( yin/yang ) and maintains a vital balance of mutual respect between the teacher and student. This heartfelt connection deepens overtime and we learn to trust in knowing that the hardships we receive in class alongside a balance of laughter is for our deeper development as a martial artist walking the way.
