CIH Center for International Health The Center for International Health ( CIH-LMU ) is located at the hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU).

The CIH-LMU has been promoting international cooperation in the field of medical education and research since 2009. The vision and overarching aim of the CIH-LMU is to empower health professionals. With this vision, CIH-LMU aspires to meet health-related challenges through capacity building in training and research. With the new OH-TARGET (One Health) project, the vision of the CIH-LMU has expanded to a more participatory and interdisciplinary approach to improve global health conditions.

Did you know?

While much of the world is in 2026, Ethiopia is welcoming the year 2019! 🎉

Ethiopia follows its own calendar, which is around seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar. It has 13 months, 12 months of 30 days, plus a short 13th month, and the new year begins on 11 September.

Today, we celebrate Enkutatash, the Ethiopian New Year. 🌿✨

📘 Our 2025 highlights are here!

We are pleased to share the first CIH Annual Highlights Report, looking back at a year of collaboration, learning, and progress across our global network. 🌍

In 2025, CIH activities connected partners and colleagues across 13 countries, strengthening collaboration in research, education, capacity building, and One Health.

Some highlights from the year include:

🌍 One Health Competence Centers in Ghana and Bolivia continued to strengthen regional capacity in research, education, and training.

🌱 523 students participated in CIH e-modules offered across our global network.

🦠 The new Advanced Module on Pandemic Preparedness, developed in collaboration with Jimma University, brought together 22 participants from more than 7 nationalities.

🎓 A new Trilateral Alliance for Medical Education connected LMU, Jimma University, and KGUMSB to strengthen collaboration in medical education, faculty development, and student exchange.

🧠 The BEAM Project supported the development of a new brain-stimulation training programme in Ethiopia, contributing to the establishment of the country’s first dedicated TMS service.

👶 The first pediatric ultrasound course in collaboration with Ola During Children’s Hospital in Sierra Leone strengthened local capacity through training and knowledge exchange.

🔬 And in 2025, CIH Network members contributed to 19 publications, advancing research and evidence in global health.

These achievements would not have been possible without the commitment of our partners, colleagues, students, alumni, and collaborators across the CIH network. Thank you for being part of this journey!

Strengthening the CIHLMU Latin America Network in Bogotá🌎

On July 13–14, 2026, partners of the CIHLMU Latin America Network met in Bogotá, Colombia, for the 2026 Strategic Meeting.

Representatives from partner universities in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Guatemala, together with CIHLMU alumni, came together to review achievements, exchange experiences and discuss priorities for 2027 and beyond.

🤝 A key focus was strengthening regional cooperation in education, research and capacity building, as well as discussing the long-term sustainability of the network.

🎓 One important milestone is the upcoming launch of a Master’s Program in One Health at Universidad San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca in Bolivia, starting in October 2026 – an important step towards strengthening One Health education in the region.

The meeting also included a visit to Universidad del Rosario, providing an opportunity to exchange perspectives and explore new areas of collaboration.

🌎 The meeting reaffirmed the network’s commitment to long-term interinstitutional cooperation and advancing One Health across Latin America.

Integrated Approaches to Mental Health in Addis Ababa 🧠

From July 21-25, 2026, the BEAM Project and the CIH Global Mental Health Focus Area travelled to Addis Ababa for a week of exchange, learning and collaboration.

A key highlight was the conference “Integrated Approaches to Mental Health: From Brain Stimulation to One Health,” organized together with colleagues from Saint Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC). 🤝

Bringing together clinicians, researchers and public health experts, the conference explored innovative approaches to mental health care – from transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to post-conflict interventions such as Narrative Exposure Therapy and Empowerment-Based Group Therapy. 💡

🏥 Another important milestone was the visit to the newly established TMS Unit at SPHMMC, supported through the BEAM Project. The team also met with local partners to discuss future collaboration and strengthening mental health care in Ethiopia.

🌍 The conference highlighted how international partnerships can drive innovation, strengthen clinical capacity and support locally adapted approaches to mental health care.

A big thank you to our colleagues at SPHMMC and to GIZ, BMZ and MAG&MORE for their support in making the conference and the establishment of the TMS Unit possible.

The conference was held in dear memory of Professor Eshetu Girma Kidane, who passed away last year. 🕊️

Strengthening Community Engagement for Leprosy Detection in Ethiopia

From June 6–15, 2026, the LeAP-Ethiopia team visited Jimma, Ethiopia, for the project’s second official visit.

A key highlight was a community engagement workshop bringing together religious leaders, community elders and healthcare professionals from Jimma and the surrounding region.

Participants discussed leprosy, early warning signs, treatment options and referral pathways. 🤝

Why does community engagement matter? People affected by leprosy often turn to trusted community and religious leaders before seeking medical care. At the same time, stigma, misconceptions and limited awareness can delay diagnosis and treatment.

The workshop was therefore an important first step in connecting community-based systems of trust with medical care empowering local leaders to help counter stigma, encourage early health-seeking behaviour and guide people towards appropriate care.

A big thank you to our local partners Prof. Esayas Kebede Gudina, Mr. Temesgen Kabeta Chala and Mr. Zeleke Alemu for facilitating the workshop and for their continued commitment to supporting local communities in eliminating leprosy.

LeAP-Ethiopia is a collaboration between LMU and Jimma University, funded by the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung.

🌏 Dialogue on One Health – Nepal

On July 21, 2026, representatives of the CIHLMU One Health Network Fund Project AntiThreat, Dr. Deepak Paudel and Rabina Dhakal, hosted an interactive Dialogue on One Health in Kathmandu, in collaboration with the Nepal One Health Institute (NOHI).

The event brought together 33 participants from civil society, government, academia, and development partners to discuss the growing importance of One Health in Nepal.

Discussions highlighted the need for stronger collaboration across the human, animal, agricultural, and environmental sectors, as well as greater institutional ownership to translate research and evidence into policy and practice.

The dialogue reinforced the importance of continued multisectoral exchange to strengthen One Health capacity and address challenges such as antimicrobial resistance. 🌏🤝
