Hike & Fly in Northern Spain 🇪🇸
📍 Islares / Playa de Arenillas, Cantabria

Just 40 km west of Bilbao, Islares combines hike & fly, coastal soaring and surfing in one place.

🏕️ Base: Camping Playa Arenillas, right on the Atlantic
🥾 Hike: about 1 hour from the campsite to takeoff
⛰️ Takeoff: Islares, approx. 340 m above sea level, large grassy area
🌬️ Wind: works best from N to NW
🪂 Flying: coastal soaring & maritime thermals
🛬 Landing: official landing field in the meadows near Najo, close to the coast

The hike alone is worth it. At the top you get a beautiful view over the Cantabrian coast: green mountains, steep cliffs, the bay of Oriñón and the open Atlantic.

In the right conditions you can soar the ridge in dynamic lift for a long time and explore the coastline from above.

And the best part: when the swell is right, you can go surfing at Playa de Arenillas right below. Campsite, surf spot and hike & fly are practically next door to each other.

Most pilots carry a rescue on every flight, but hardly anyone talks about actually using it. For many, pulling that handle stays a scary unknown. 🪂

Helena threw her rescue for the very first time, over Lake Idro with Roman from . Before the throw, she wasn’t sure what to expect. Afterwards, her perspective had changed completely: what she imagined would be dynamic, even frightening, turned out to be calm and controlled. Throw, stall the glider, hold, and float down.

We encourage every pilot to try their full rescue system at least once. Knowing what to expect and that you can trust your equipment makes all the difference in the moment you actually need it.

Fly safe, and know your system.

⚠️ Rescue throws should only be practiced under professional supervision, ideally over water as part of a safety training.

Big news: Charles de Beaufort is officially part of the skywalk PEOPLE team 🔥

Most of the time you’ll find him chasing triangles over the French Alps. When he’s not in the air, he swaps the harness for a pharmacist’s coat in Grenoble.

His track record so far: runner-up at the French hike & fly championships in 2025 and 2026, runner-up at the French xc championships in 2025, 3rd in 2026 and personal bests of 350 km FAI triangle and 365 km flat triangle.

Our prescription: more airtime 💊

What he loves most about flying? Competing with his friends, pushing each other to get better every day, staying safe and having a great time together.

When the conditions say no, you’ll find him kitesurfing, fishing, skiing or, in his own words, „for sure: trail running.“ ⛰️🏃🏼
