Merry Christmas all! We hope Santa Claus was good. Unfortunately we have a sad announcement to make. We hope we don’t dampen your Christmas cheer too much!
We have decided to end our campaign for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This has been a very difficult decision, and one we have been thinking about for a long time.
Sailing is something we are both passionate about. Being given the opportunity to spend every day on the water training and competing is an immense privilege, and something we truly love doing. However we feel that to earn that privilege we need to have a realistic chance of producing a world class result at the games in Tokyo 2020; both for ourselves, and the people supporting us. Looking at our current position in the world rankings, and the resources we have available to us, we do not think that is a realistic proposition.
Despite this, we are still immensely proud of the results we have achieved in the past 12 months. We couldn’t have done any of it without the help and support of a huge number of people – too many to name here. You know who you are! Thank you!
This opens a new chapter for both of us. Matt has plenty of sailing related plans in the pipeline, which will keep him busy along with his role as full time nappy changer at the McGovern house. Robbie may have to don a suit and tie for a while. However, no doubt you will see both of us in a boat park sometime soon!
Merry Christmas.
Matt and Robbie
