The Last Voyage of the Demeter – One Final Sail

Will this be the final voyage of the Demeter? Who knows, maybe one day we will return to this doomed ship and sail it once more. But for now, the 13th run this November is the end of this journey. It’s time to hoist the sails once more and sail the Last Voyage. May it be a great one!

We’re ready to set sail toward new horizons.

To move forward, we must let go of what lies behind us and we do so with both a smile and a tear. Our hearts are full of gratitude for the countless intense, emotional, and unforgettable moments we were able to create together with you aboard the Demeter. Every story, every character, every shared breath of fear and wonder will stay with us.
But every ending carries the promise of a beginning. Now it’s time to make space: space in our minds and in our hearts. Space for bold new concepts, fresh ideas, and stories yet untold… stories we can bring to life together with you.
So while we say goodbye, we also look ahead with excitement, curiosity, and anticipation for what’s to come. Stay with us. This is only the start of a new chapter.

The Story Ends. The Values Remain

The time of Demeter is coming to an end.
But what will not change are the values we bring to our games.

Sexism is not part of this game.
We want everyone to experience the joy of sailing.
Not just a few.
We care about atmosphere and immersion.
But not at the cost of excluding half the crew, because “this is a man's job”.

This also means no xenophobia and no racism.
Dracula may come from far away.
But this story is not about fear of the “other.”
It is about people. About danger. About what is at stake for each character.
And there is no place for q***r hate.
No homophobia. No biphobia. No transphobia.
Relationships between characters are treated equally.
No matter gender. No matter identity.
Respect is not optional.
It is the foundation of the story we create together.
And this is the foundation on which all our future games will stand.

The Horror Within Us - The Most Radical Choice We Made

When we came up with the idea originally, we just knew that we wanted to base the game on chapter 7 of the novel. One of the most difficult decisions in the beginning was what we should do with Dracula himself. We all had seen vampires depicted in larp settings, some amazing, some not so much. And we knew that the emotional journey of the larp would depend completely on how we would be able to deliver on the promise of the „greatest vampire of all time“, the „original“. How can you make sure, this emotional journey delivers the impact that this story needs?

No living soul arrives in England when the Demeter reaches Whitby, this much was sure. But _how_ this came to be is not clear.

The solution we came up with, was as simple as it was radical. We removed Dracula as a single point of evil and instead, we transported the meaning of Dracula into the whole game. Every character, every story, every prop, carries a piece of Dracula in it. There is no bigger evil than people in this game. The true horror is what we do to ourselves.

A Song for the Last One That Stays

At the first run, Tyll Wibben (the NPC playing the Captain) spontaneously started singing at the end of the game. It was a melancholic Scotch ballad (called „Both sides the Tweed“) which we really loved. It was a beautiful scene and the music fit the mood perfectly.

But it also had a number of drawbacks:
1. The lyrics were not related to the stories we were telling.
2. It was a song that this specific NPC could sing, but he couldn’t make it to the third run.
3. We wanted to introduce music to start the game chapters and thought about having some sort of common theme or connection to the song with this music.

At the Nordic Larp conference Solmukohta that year, Finnish composer and musician Anni Tolvanen held a talk about Larp and sound design. She offered to help us with the sound design and ended up writing the chilling tune to our theme song, „The Last One That Stays“. Norman Aretz, one of our organiser crew, created the lyrics.
Anni herself played the Nyckelharpa for the recording of the song while Martin Åkesson played guitar and sung the vocals. An instrumental and shorter version of „The Last One That Stays“ is used as the chapter opener for Demeter since then. It changed the game profoundly and we are grateful that we have such a unique and beautifully sad song to accompany our larp.

Music: Anni Tolvanen
Lyrics: Norman Aretz
Guitar&Vocals: Martin Åkesson

Becoming Miss Harding - Report from a player, PART 2 of 2

Standing there in the stern of the three-masted scooner, stairing into the waves and singing a song, my fear slowly disintegrated. In its place came a feeling I had never known before.

I live by the sea. It is beautiful, but no more... until now.
Since I came home, I have felt a totally new confidence and longing; I want to sail again.

This morning I took a trip to the pier - I sometimes do, but I stay far away from any edges. I have never been to the outer jetty before. I didn't have a reason. I didn't dare. I went there today. I had to. No problems at all. When I came to the end of the path, I wanted to continue. I usually want to turn around. Something is different inside me. This is one of the things a larp can do to you if you let it.

Erase your irrational fears and give you a bigger world.

Becoming Miss Harding - Report from a player, PART 1 of 2

A week ago, I stepped aboard Pippilotta. To become part of Demeter. To play a sailor.
A week ago, I was afraid of the sea. Not just a little. I got scared easily. Ferry or rowing boat, it didn’t matter.
But then there was Steve. Calm and kind. And I thought, what could possibly go wrong? And I was right.
Thirty people. One schooner.Sailing. Storytelling. And yes, killing each other in the game. I had been looking forward to this for half a year.

Then came the first morning. The ship started moving and everything changed. From one second to the next I felt seasick and afraid. I stood at the stern and watched the waves. I wondered where I might throw up. (Luckily, I didn’t.)

I told myself: I did not buy this ticket to stand here and puke for three days straight!

I told myself as a roleplayer: You are a sailor. Act like one.

I told myself as my character: Miss Harding, if you show weakness, they will know. They will question everything. So get a grip. Hold your facade. Fake it till you make it.

And then I started singing, so it wouldn’t seem strange that I was alone at the stern…

The laws of terror that stay with you

Twelve voyages and the 13th to come. A number steeped in superstition—the perfect omen for our final departure. As we prepare for the 13th and final run, it’s time to look back at the psychological backbone of our journey: The Laws of Terror. These aren’t just rules; they are the ingredients for those haunting, visceral moments that stay with you long after you’ve stepped off the deck.
1st law: At night, you’re safer alone.
2nd law: There’s not always an explanation...
3rd law: Have you heard the secret?
4th law: There’s evil in every living soul.
5th law: There is no escape.
How many of these did you "accidentally" break—or lean into—at your run?
Which Law of Terror defined your favorite Demeter memory? Was it a secret shared before giving in to despair or a solo walk on a moonless deck while realizing you weren’t actually alone?
Share your stories below.

The Ship Behind the Story

All this would never have been the same without the traditional sailing ship Pippilotta and its amazing crew. The nearly 100 year old vessel is a 3-masted gaffe rigged schooner with a steel hull. Everything aboard is part of the experience, from preparing meals to navigation, setting sails and helming the ship. We are incredibly grateful for the freedom and possibilities aboard and the fact that we can run such a unique event on this ship.

We’ve learned so much aboard the Demeter.

We found new friendships and met incredible people from all over the world. We built connections that will last far beyond this journey. Together, we laughed, felt fear, created, and told stories that will stay with us forever.

Along the way, we discovered what LARP can truly be. It became a space to experiment, to take risks, and to grow. We tried new concepts, challenged ourselves again and again, and watched our ideas evolve into something bigger than we ever imagined.

And somewhere between stormy nights and quiet mornings, the longing for the sea became part of us. We fell in love with the Pippilotta, her wonderful crew, and the endless sea. That is something we will miss more than words can express.

We learned how to navigate the ship,, to set the sails and to weigh anchor when it was time to move on… but more than anything, we learned what it truly means to share a journey.
