🌿 Not all grass species respond in the same way.

Cool-season grasses, such as ryegrass and bentgrass, perform best in cooler conditions.

Warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda and zoysia, are built for higher temperatures.

That means they respond differently to light, heat and stress.

A lighting strategy that supports one species may not be right for another.

The right light recipe should reflect the grass species, the climate, the season and the recovery goal.

Turf lighting on its own doesn’t tell the full story.

Supplementary lighting only does its job when it’s considered alongside shade patterns, turf condition and how heavily a pitch is used.

That system includes the stadium environment, the grass species growing in it and the season it’s growing through. It also means monitoring usage levels, heat, humidity and wind, and setting realistic recovery targets rather than working to a fixed maintenance schedule.

Turf Lighting Myths – What’s Actually True?

In our Turf Lighting Myths series, we break down the most common misconceptions in stadium turf lighting — and we’ll show you what science actually tells us.

❌ Myth
Using LED turf lighting increases humidity, leading to fungal diseases.

🌿 Reality
Modern LED systems produce very little downward heat, so they don’t create a humid "greenhouse effect" around the turf.
When combined with proper pitch ventilation and airflow management, LED lighting can actually help reduce moisture buildup — creating conditions that are less favourable for fungal diseases.

👉 Healthy turf depends on the right balance of light, moisture and climate control.

The latest issue of Stadionwelt INSIDE looks at how the VELTINS-Arena has evolved over 25 years — from its movable pitch and retractable roof to today's approach to venue operations.

For us, the article is a great example of the long-term value of turf technology that continues to develop alongside the needs of the grounds team.

👉 Meet Tony Owen, Sales Manager at TLS x Rhenac

With a background in groundskeeping, education and client management, Tony brings years of hands-on industry experience to the team. He supports clubs across the UK and Ireland, helping customers find the right solutions while providing technical expertise and on-site support.

Outside of work, he enjoys fishing, travelling and following football, rugby and cricket.
One of his fishing highlights was winning a gold medal at the Home Internationals in England.

His motto is:
"It always seems impossible until it's done.”
