LOST HORIZONS • ULTRACYCLING 🌄
This one definitely tested me.
The start felt really good—until I crashed. Unfortunately, I landed on my drivetrain, which had me worried for the rest of the ride. From there, the heat just kept getting worse.
It took me a while to find my rhythm again, and for the first time during this event, I cried. Still, I found a pretty unique place to sleep: under a ping pong table.
Day one was full of long, monotonous roads, brutal heat, and constant headwinds. Mentally, I hit a few low points. Nothing really felt right anymore, and every water fountain became a welcome excuse to cool down. I didn’t make it to my planned stop, and my campsite turned out to be a poor choice—cold, windy, and not very restful.
Day two was all about getting over the climbs. With a bit more shade, the heat became slightly more manageable, and the scenery started to get more interesting again. One of the highlights was meeting a flock of sheep and five shepherd dogs during the night. That evening, I slept in a small village and finally got some proper rest.
Day three was by far the hottest. I was running on empty. Everything hurt, and I honestly felt a bit disconnected from myself.
But somehow, I kept moving forward—and made it to the finish. 🥹
Not every race goes as planned, but every challenge teaches you something. This one reminded me that sometimes it’s enough to just keep going.
