Chromatic Yoga A step by step approach to gaining mastery in the body through the practice of yoga

Rooted in the intention to feel good in the mind and body, Chromatic Yoga is a step by step approach to gaining mastery in the body. Chromatic Yoga does not have any set alignments for the asana practice, rather it regards yoga postures as shapes that can be shifted based on the intention that day. Posture come second to mastery of the body, and awareness of the mind, but are still celebrated. By whatever means necessary, Chromatic Yoga strives to help students feel how they truly want to feel .

This week we're exploring spinal flexion, the movement of rounding the spine.

While we often think of flexion in poses like Cat Pose, Child's Pose, or Standing Forward Fold, this movement is also an important part of everyday life. Understanding how your spine flexes can improve both mobility and body awareness.

As you move this week, notice:
• Does one region of your spine round more easily than another?
• Can you initiate the movement from different parts of the spine?
• How does your breath influence your ability to flex?

Every movement offers an opportunity to learn something new about your body.

Teachers, we'd love to see how you're exploring spinal flexion! Share your peak poses, layering postures, or creative sequencing around this week's theme. Tag and invite us as a collaborator so we can celebrate and share your teachings with the community.

Week 1: Spinal Extension

This month we're exploring the many ways the spine moves, beginning with spinal extension.

Extension is the action of arching or lengthening the spine backward. We experience it in poses like Cobra, Upward Facing Dog, Camel, Bridge, and Wheel. But spinal extension isn't about creating the biggest backbend. It's about learning how the movement is distributed throughout the spine.

As you practice this week, become curious:
• Where does your extension naturally come from?
• Are there areas that move easily and others that feel more restricted?
• Can you create length before you create depth?

Sometimes the most meaningful backbends aren't the deepest ones. They're the ones where every part of the spine gets the opportunity to participate.

Teachers, we'd love to see how you're exploring spinal extension! Share your peak poses, layering postures, or creative ways you're teaching this week's throughline. Tag and invite us as a collaborator so we can share your inspiration with the community.

August Week 4: Ankle Plantarflexion 🌟

Our final throughline of the month is ankle plantarflexion—the action of pointing the toes away from the shin.

While we often think of plantarflexion in poses like Hero Pose, Camel, Dancer, or when pressing the tops of the feet into the mat in Cobra or Upward Facing Dog, it's also essential for walking, running, jumping, and creating a strong push into the ground.

As you move this week, notice:
• Can you actively point your foot without gripping your toes?
• How does the position of your ankle influence the rest of your leg?
• When do you use plantarflexion to create stability versus mobility?

The hands and feet may be our points of contact with the world, but they also provide incredible feedback. The more aware we become of the extremities, the more connected the entire body becomes.

Teachers - share your ideas on how to bring Dorsiflexion into your practice and your teaching. Let's work together as a chromatic community! Happy exploring!

August Week 3: Ankle Dorsiflexion 🦶

Moving away from the wrists and down to the feet! Ankles often don't get much attention... until they limit a pose.

Dorsiflexion is the action of bringing the top of the foot toward the shin. It plays an important role in poses like Malasana, Chair Pose, Crescent Lunge, Warrior II, and many balancing postures.

This week, explore:
• Does one ankle bend more easily than the other?
• Where do you feel resistance? Your calf, Achilles tendon, or the front of the ankle?
• If your ankle runs out of motion, what does the rest of your body do to compensate?

Sometimes improving a pose starts much lower in the body than we realize.

Teachers - share your ideas on how to bring Dorsiflexion into your practice and your teaching. Let's work together as a chromatic community!

August Week 2: Wrist Extension 🤲

If you've ever felt discomfort in your wrists during yoga, this week's throughline is for you.

Wrist extension, bringing the back of the hand toward the forearm, is one of the most common joint actions in yoga. We rely on it in poses like Tabletop, Plank, Chaturanga, Side Plank, Crow, and Handstand.

Rather than forcing your wrists into more range, spend this week becoming curious:
• How much extension do you actually have?
• Does one wrist move differently than the other?
• Can you distribute weight through your entire hand instead of collapsing into one area?

Sometimes improving comfort isn't about stretching more, it's about moving with greater awareness.

Share your ideas on how to strengthen your wrist extensors and collaborate with the Chromatic community!

August Week 1: Wrist Flexion ✋

When you think about your wrists, you probably picture weight-bearing poses like Downward Facing Dog or Plank. But before we can safely load the wrists, it's important to understand how they move.

This week we're exploring wrist flexion, the action of bringing the palm toward the inner forearm. While we don't spend much time in deep wrist flexion during yoga poses, understanding this movement helps us appreciate the full range of motion available at the joint and how balance between flexion and extension supports healthy function.

As you practice this week, notice:
• Where do you naturally move into wrist flexion?
• Does one side feel different than the other?
• How might exploring this action improve your awareness in the rest of your practice?

Every movement teaches us something.

Chromatic Teachers - how are you going to explore and teach Wrist Flexion this week? Share your ideas and let's collaborate together!

For our last week of July in Chromatic Yoga it's all about Knee Flexion, the action of bending the knee. You’ll feel it in squats, child’s pose, and any shape where the pelvis moves closer to the heels. Swipe to see how knee flexion shows up in your asana practice and how you can make it active, intentional, and strong. Let us know your creative ways that you're using knee flexion in your practice and your teaching!

Week 3 of July is HIP FLEXION

I never really knew what this meant before I studied yoga and anatomy. To flex a muscle…like to squeeze it?

Turns out anatomically speaking flexion happen when we close the angle between two body parts. That action happens at a joint and in this case it’s the hips! The moving parts of the angle are the thigh bone and the torso.

So - hip flexion happens when the angle is reduced between your torso and your thighs!

As always in we like to find ways to activate the muscle in various joint alignments. Try out the cues from this post to feel your hip flexors engaged in both their shortened and lengthened positions.

Please share your posts! Tag and we will reshare your posts.

We look forward to seeing your brilliance 🔥🔥
