EUROBOWL ###II: Excitement in the high-class finale -
New Yorker Lions win 20-19 against the Samsung Frankfurt Universe

Frankfurt - It was a final, in which nothing was missing. Tactical offense, spectacular defense, numerous penalties, and above all crackling tension to the end. In the EUROBOWL ###II in the Frankfurt PSD Bank Arena the two opponents Samsung Frankfurt Universe and New Yorker Lions donated but absolutely nothing. And this time not only the fans in the stadium but all football fans all over Germany got their money's worth through the live broadcast of SPORT1.

And often, when two teams meet at eye level in football, nuances decide - and the special teams. The same applies to the likeliest 20-19 victory of the Lions.

But one after another. The defending champion from Braunschweig got the better start. First, the defense of the guests could stop the first offensive sequence of Frankfurt by a forced fumble. The winning ball then resulted in the first touchdown after a pass from Lions´ quarterback Jadrian Clark to Niklas Römer. Including the extra point the Lower Saxonies led by 7-0.

But then the tension first blew over the sky of Frankfurt. Lightning, thunder and heavy rain caused to a break in the first quarter, the referees sent both teams in the locker rooms. Almost 100 minutes had the 3,122 fans in the stadium hold until the fierce thunderstorm passed and the finale was continued.

The flash seemed to have hit the home side's locker, as electrified the players of the Samsung Frankfurt Universe came back to the field. In the second turn, Clark was tackled so hard that he lost the egg and the Universe came into possession. In the offense of the Frankfurter Andrew Elffers now moved the strings as quarterback instead of Sonny Weishaupt. And the newcomer from overseas showed what to expect from him. Own runs and targeted passes. And if the opposing defense has to adjust, rooms remain for the others. And so running back Justin Rodney made with a spectacular run over 55 yards for the first touchdown of the Hessians. But the extra point attempt failed and so it was only 6-7 from the point of view of the hosts. A mistake that should take revenge until the end.

But first things went well for Universe. After a pass from Lions´ quarterback Clark into the arms of Frankfurt's Kweishi Brown, the defensive back sprinted over 60 yards to the next touchdown of the Universe. To compensate for the erroneous extra point attempt, they now went to the two-point conversion. But this was not crowned with success, which left it at Frankfurt 12-7.

In the third quarter, it was again the strong defense of Frankfurt that took the ball by another fumble after a hard tackle on the Lions´ 15 yard line. Shortly thereafter, Elffers found his wide receiver David Geron in the end zone - Universe led by 19-7.

But then the defending champion showed its comeback qualities. David McCants with a 4-yard run and Clark with a 1-yard run turned the game with their touchdowns, the Lions suddenly led 20-10. The hosts had already stopped the lions, but committed at the field goal attempt, however, a personal foul, which led to the automatic new first down of Braunschweig and the subsequent run in the end zone. To extend the lead to three points, the guests tried after the second touchdown a two-point conversion, but failed. And so Frankfurt still had the great opportunity to win the EUROBOWL for the first time.

Yard after yard, it headed to the endzone of the Lions. But the defense of Braunschweig stopped the hosts ultimately on the 25-yard line, so that the coaches decided to shoot a field goal. However, Max Siemssen's attempt of 43 yards missed the goal lines 53 seconds before the finals ended, destroying the hopes of the hosts of beating the New Yorker Lions for the first time.

Braunschweig, which also placed the MVP with quarterback Jadrion Clark, won the EUROBOWL for the fourth time in a row, for the sixth time overall - record!

A memorable final that started on Saturday and ended on Sunday. The fans will not soon forget the visit to the stadium or the live broadcast on SPORT1.

Doch Samsung Frankfurt Universe will diese Serie brechen.

EUROBOWL ###II - Battle of the European heavyweights

Frankfurt - It's a fight of European heavyweights. It's the revenge for the last season. It's about the crown in European football for clubs.

On Saturday, 9th of June, starting at 8:05 p.m. (live on SPORT1 at 8 p.m.), the Samsung Frankfurt Universe will welcome the New Yorker Lions from Braunschweig to the EUROBOWL ###II in the PSD Bank Arena in Frankfurt, when two of the best continental teams meet in the most important European final for club teams.

And at the same time the duel of the two German teams is a revenge for the final of last year. In 2017, the Lions from Lower Saxony in EUROBOWL could triumph in EUROBOWL ###I against the hosts with 55-14.

That on Saturday a closer game with an uncertain outcome is to be expected, shows the statistics of the current season.
Both teams qualified with two wins in the preliminary round for the EUROBOWL, where the New Yorker Lions had some difficulties in the first encounter at Flash La Courneuve to win the game for themselves.

The result was also due to the new composition of the team. Following the defeat in last year's German Bowl, the final of the GFL, the Lions squad had a little change, especially on the key position. On the long-time quarterback Casey Therriault followed with Jadrian Clark a slightly different type of player.

But the course of the season so far shows clearly that the offense of the Lions has been found and hurries sovereign from victory to victory - and the team also has a strong defense. In the GFL Braunschweig won so far all four games with a points balance of 117- 9. The 60-0 against Amsterdam and the 10- 6 away win in the BIG6 EUROBOWL Tournament came on top.

But Samsung Frankfurt Universe wants to break this series. And seems capable of doing so. The season of the Hesse with the new head coach Brian Caler, who replaced the retired Markus Grahn on the bridge of the Frankfurt, was similarly successful: two clear victories on international level, four victories in series in the GFL. But last weekend the tam got the first defeat: 7-17 at the reigning German champions Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. Against the same opponent, who had defeated the New Yorker Lions in the last German Bowl.

However, the injury-related loss of quarterback Steve Cluley hurts. Although the Hesse have a good substitute with the German international Sonny Weishaupt, they secured the injury by the commitment of Andrew Elffers. How fast the 23-year-old American has internalized the offensive system of the Universe, remains to be seen. This could be a key to the final decision.

Braunschweig's longtime success coach Troy Tomlin, however, does not want to hope for that: "It will be a tough and hard-fought game. It's about the crown of Europe. Only if we do our best, stay disciplined and error free, and perform the necessary tackles and blocks properly, we can bring the game in our direction."

Two German clubs are fighting for Europe's football crown: SPORT1 broadcasts EUROBOWL ###II live on Free TV at 8 p.m. on the 9th of June

• A purely German final for the fifth time in EUROBOWL history: Samsung Frankfurt Universe against defending champion New Yorker Lions Braunschweig
• Further expansion of the cooperation between SPORT1 and the German Football League (GFL)

Showdown of Europe's football throne on prime time on Saturday night: The finale of EUORBOWL ###II between Samsung Frankfurt Universe and defending champion New Yorker Lions Braunschweig will be broadcast live on SPORT1 on Saturday, 9th of June 9, at 8 p.m. in the Free TV. For the fifth time in the history of the EUROBOWL, a purely German final will be kicked off at the PSD Bank Arena in Frankfurt am Main. Germany's leading 360 ° sports platform and the German Football League (GFL) are further expanding their cooperation, which began this spring, with this free-TV live broadcast.

Daniel von Busse, COO TV and Member of the Board of SPORT1: "The EUROBOWL is the next highlight in our partnership with the GFL, after we had already agreed to air the German Bowl in October and a weekly GFL magazine beginning in August. With the broadcast of the pure German final in primetime on Saturday night, we substantiate our great commitment to American football and want to inspire more fans for this fascinating sport with this prominent slot. "

"The fact that two of the strongest and most attractive GFL teams can play against each other again this year in the final of the EUROBOWL underlines the top position of our league in Europe," said Robert Huber, President of the American Football Association Germany (AFVD). "The partnership with SPORT1 enables us to bring the high sporting quality of German American Football even closer to a larger TV audience before the German Bowl with the EUROBOWL in Frankfurt."

The German Bowl XL on October 13th will also be shown live and exclusively on SPORT1 - now football fans in Germany can already look forward to three hours of high-class GFL football on Free-TV on the 9th of June: The two teams Frankfurt and Braunschweig had an expected strong start into the season and also lived up to their role as favorites in the preliminary round of the EUROBOWL tournament. In the deciding games Frankfurt (48-6 against Paris) and Braunschweig (60-0 against Amsterdam) had qualified for EUROBOWL ###II at the end of April with clear home wins.

Both teams are strong this year both in defense and in offense. On the one hand, the outstanding defense achievements of both teams guarantee a thrilling match until the end, while on the other both offer strong US and European players in the offense, who are always good for spectacular touchdowns. After the first five game weeks of the GFL season 2018 offense of the Lions lead on points, while the offense of the Samsung Universe lead after Yards room win in the league. But since both defenses are each one of the top three in in all important categories, only on the lawn of the Frankfurt PSD Bank Arena on Bornheimer Hang it will show what the impressive statistics are actually worth.

As a reward waving the highest trophy of European club football. For the EUROBOWL was first played in 1986, since 1988 there is the annual competition. The New Yorker Lions from Braunschweig are entering the game as defending champions in the Main metropolis, where they won the 2017 final with 55-14. For Braunschweig, this was the fifth EUROBOWL win and the third in a row. With another victory, the Lions would be the sole record holder of the competition in front of the Vienna Vikings, who have also won five times so far. German clubs have so far won a total of eleven EUROBOWLs.

American Football on SPORT1
SPORT1 has been broadcasting American football on its platforms for years - such as live on Free TV at the World Games 2017, for example. The pay-TV channel SPORT1 US has been involved in American football since its launch in 2013 - currently, in particular, NCAA College Football. Last year, SPORT1 also presented the live premiere of College Football from the USA on German Free-TV and regularly staged the world's biggest football talents with a fixed slot on Saturday night. Also on its digital platforms, SPORT1 reports extensively on American football - including in the US sports channel on SPORT1.de or on its social media channels.
