José Mourinho:

“The Ballon d’Or should go to one of those players who, when they retire, you miss them forever. Maradona, Cristiano, Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane.

You can’t give the Ballon d’Or to a player simply because they won the Champions League or the World Cup. If you’re going to give it to someone just because they won the Champions League, then give it to Luis Enrique.

The award should go to the best player in the world, not necessarily a Spanish player or a Paris Saint-Germain player. It should go to one of the top three or four players in the world, and those players are here.

But politics plays a role in the award, which is why I don’t like getting involved in political matters.”

I don’t even know how to tell you this, but Messi has just retired from international football!

Messi wrote the following in his retirement statement:

“After thinking about it a lot, I want to tell everyone that I am retiring from international football. It’s a decision that comes from deep within me, but I believe this is the right moment. I have given everything I had for this shirt, so that you could feel proud. From now on, I will become one of you, cheering and supporting from the outside.”

This day was always going to come. Even though Messi is still in incredible form and could easily play in another Copa América, mentally, he has reached his limit after his father passed away. His father was the foundation of his entire journey, as Messi himself once acknowledged.

What an incredible journey, in every sense of the word.

A journey that began with chants of “Messi, you’re a disappointment,” followed by an early international retirement, and ended with the greatest international comeback of all time: a World Cup, two Copa América titles, a Finalissima, two World Cup Golden Balls, the most goal contributions in World Cup history, and 193 goal contributions in 207 appearances!

The journey is over, but without a doubt, it was the greatest international career in Argentina’s history.

Bobo Vieri explains why Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta seemed to struggle against Ronaldo:

“For me, Paolo Maldini is the best defender in the history of football. Alessandro Nesta comes right after him.

If you put any player one-on-one against either of them today, they simply wouldn’t get a touch. Maldini and Nesta could man-mark anyone and completely shut them down.

Except Ronaldo.

He was physically stronger, faster, and more powerful.

Nesta faced Ronaldo when Lazio played Inter. Nesta said Ronaldo treated him like he was a six-year-old kid.

When Ronaldo performed the ‘double step’ in training, I used to laugh. Not because it was funny, but because you simply had never seen anything like it before.

The best defenders in the world were falling to the ground, looking like dolls.

It’s no coincidence, Xabi Alonso, that the strangest club management in the world is sitting there today, watching you and applauding your team!

It’s no coincidence either that, despite never having played for Chelsea as a player, they made a tifo featuring your image as early as your third match!

And even your celebration, that madness and pure emotion after the third goal, wasn’t a coincidence!

At this exact point last year, Alonso was in Madrid trying to implement his ideas at a club he had grown to support over time. But he didn’t have a club president backing him. He had Florentino Pérez counting down the days until his dismissal, players who hated the idea of being asked to actually play football his way, and team news constantly leaking outside the club.

Even the fans were divided over him, and for some, his dismissal came as a relief.

When Alonso chose his new club, he was asked why he didn’t wait for Liverpool, another club from his past. His answer was that the project here was better for him, despite the struggles every previous manager at this club had faced.

This time, however, they gave him the signings he wanted, their full trust, and complete control over his players and his project.

And once Alonso finally got the right environment, despite the obvious weaknesses in defense, just look at what he has done offensively in only three matches:

Before he wore the famous red and black of Milan… there was a night when Madrid stood frozen. 🇺🇦🔥

In March 1999, Real Madrid entered the Champions League quarter-finals as the reigning European champions, backed by a squad packed with stars.

But on the other side stood a 21-year-old Ukrainian striker, guided by the legendary Valeriy Lobanovskyi.

His name was Andriy Shevchenko.

At the Bernabéu, Shevchenko showed no fear of Real Madrid or the famous stadium. He burst behind the defense, beat the offside trap with incredible composure, and put Dynamo Kyiv ahead before Madrid fought back to salvage a 1–1 draw.

But the second leg in Kyiv was a completely different story…

Dynamo Kyiv 2–0 Real Madrid.

Shevchenko opened the scoring from the penalty spot, constantly tormented the Madrid defense, and helped turn the night into a nightmare for the defending champions.

Dynamo eventually sealed the victory with a second goal, eliminating Real Madrid and sending Kyiv into the semi-finals.

Shevchenko’s tally? Two goals across the two legs, out of the three goals Dynamo scored against Real Madrid.

It wasn’t just a great performance from a rising star…

It was one of those nights that announced to Europe that a special striker had arrived.

And just a few months later, AC Milan came calling.

Nearly $25 million was paid to bring Shevchenko to San Siro…

I know Mbappé scored a hat-trick and won Man of the Match, but the truly impressive player in front of you is one of the main reasons this game opened up and Real Madrid were able to beat Real Sociedad 4-1.

When the score was 0-0, two forwards were pressing Hausen and Konaté. Valverde dropped alongside them as the third presser, becoming the free man who could carry the ball forward and put Mbappé in the perfect position to score the opening goal.

But the most impressive moment was this: the score was 1-1 and Sociedad were sitting deep. Valverde lifted his head, spotted Cucurella, and then played a pass with the inside of his foot into Mbappé, who was positioned between two defenders. It was an unexpected decision that raised the tempo, created chaos in Sociedad’s defensive shape, and eventually led to the go-ahead goal.

Today’s match proves to me that Valverde is miles better than Tchouaméni. He can carry the ball, he can play forward when he has time on the ball, he presses aggressively, and he brings an incredible amount of energy to midfield. Tchouaméni simply doesn’t offer these qualities at the same level.

And if Mourinho wants to achieve something with Real Madrid, his midfield three should not move away from Bernardo Silva – Valverde – Arda Güler.

For me, that is the most balanced midfield trio, giving Real Madrid quality, movement, pressing, and creativity. ❤️

I married a very beautiful woman. I loved her, and I loved what we had together. But do you know what happened? We separated. And do you know why? We lost the passion.

Did she love me? Yes.
Did I love her? Yes.

But we lost the passion in our relationship. And football is no different. It’s not enough to play football and say that you love the game. You have to stay passionate about it.

And if one day you feel that you’ve lost the passion for your home, then leave. Because without passion, no relationship will last, and without passion, you will never succeed in football.
