You’re training in the wrong shoes. And it’s costing you gains.
I see it every single day in the gym. Someone squatting 100kg in running shoes. Doing box jumps in Vaporfly. Deadlifting in Air Max 90s.
Running shoes are built to move you FORWARD. They have cushion. They have a curved sole. They compress under load. That’s exactly what you DON’T want when you’re trying to push force INTO the ground.
Training shoes are built to move you IN EVERY DIRECTION. Lateral stability. Flat base. Minimal compression. That’s what keeps your knees safe, your power transfer clean, and your lifts honest.
Here’s the breakdown — and WHY each one matters.
🔧 #1 — FREE METCON 7 — The All-Rounder ($120)
WHY THIS SHOE: Most people go to the gym and do a bit of everything. Some squats, some push-ups, maybe a HIIT circuit, maybe 10 minutes on the bike. You need a shoe that does all of that without failing at any of it.
The Free Metcon 7 is Nike’s answer to that problem. The sole is split into two zones — the forefoot uses Nike Free technology, which bends and flexes naturally with your foot during burpees, mountain climbers, and lateral movements. The heel uses Metcon-level density, which stays flat and firm during squats, lunges, and presses.
The base is 116mm wide in the forefoot. For context, most running shoes sit around 108mm. That extra 8mm doesn’t sound like much — but it’s the difference between feeling planted and feeling like you’re balancing on a rail.
WHO IT’S FOR: The 80% of gym-goers who do mixed sessions. Nike Training app users. Boot camp and class people. Anyone who wants ONE shoe that handles everything from warm-up to cool-down.
WHO IT’S NOT FOR: Pure powerlifters or Olympic lifters who need maximum heel elevation and zero flex.
WHY THIS SHOE: The Metcon 9 went too far. Too stiff. Too heavy. Too much like a lifting shoe pretending to be a trainer. Nike heard the feedback and stripped the Metcon 10 down to what matters.
They dropped 65 grams. They added ReactX foam — the same tech in the Pegasus running line — which gives you actual comfort during high-impact movements without losing ground contact. The Hyperlift insert raises your heel during squats, which
