As a leader, your immediate reflex when you feel a tickle in your throat is usually to go into control mode. You buy over the counter meds, push through your calendar, and tell yourself: *“I absolutely don’t have time for this right now.“*
But from a neurological perspective, this exact stress response is what derails your recovery. When you panic about getting sick, your brain releases a flood of cortisol. High cortisol levels directly suppress your immune system. By trying to force your way through it, you are literally turning off your body’s natural defense mechanism.
The placebo effect isn’t wishful thinking it is measurable biology. When you consciously slow down, stop obsessing over the symptoms, and expect your body to recover, you shift your nervous system from alert mode to recovery mode. Once the internal alarm stops ringing, your immune cells can finally do their job uninterrupted.
The hardest part for high-performers isn’t taking action, it’s doing nothing. But when it comes to minor bugs, stepping back and letting your biology run its script is the fastest way back to full capacity.
How do you usually react when you feel a cold coming on do you instantly try to fight it to stay functional, or can you step back and let your body handle it? 👇
