I came to the Shanghai Bike Show expecting impressive bikes. I didn’t expect this. The Incolor SSR aero superbike, fully built, tips the scales at just 5.45 kilograms. That ultra-narrow head tube isn’t there for aesthetics, it’s aerodynamic science: less frontal area, less drag, more speed. Paired with Overfast wheels and through axles, this machine is hunting every watt advantage possible. And it’s running a full 2-by drivetrain, no weight-saving shortcuts, just pure engineering dialled to the absolute limit. The saddle might humble you. The speed won’t.

On Saturday, I took part in a recreational race covering about 85 km with 1,000 meters of elevation gain. I had originally planned to ride the Winspace M6, but for some mysterious reason, the Di2 battery died while it was on the charger, so I ended up riding the SLC5.

I spent the first half of the race in the front group. I wasted energy unnecessarily at times, but I was having fun. 🤣 On the decisive climb, though, I was a few seconds behind the leaders. Unfortunately, we couldn’t organize a second group (there were a lot of teammates of the favorite rider in the first group, so they thwarted our efforts). In the end, I finished 17th out of about 213 people.

The SLC5 turned out to be a good choice, and I didn’t even miss having higher gears. I rode back from the race along the same route and enjoyed it probably more than the race itself. I won’t lie. It’s beautiful here. 🤩

It was also interesting for me to see how many people were riding Chinese bikes. There were about 8 of us here; two years ago, I was usually the only one. Times are changing...

Thanks for beautiful photos

That crankset looks like full carbon. It is not. The crank arms are carbon, yes. But the chainring? Aluminum underneath a carbon-look wrap. This is more common than most cyclists realise, and brands rely on you not looking closely enough. I am showing you the difference side by side: a genuine full-carbon chainring next to one that is just wearing a disguise. Know what you are buying.

No.6 refreshed their entire lineup and the numbers are tighter than before: wider rims, better weight, and Silverstone wind tunnel data showing a few watts saved over the previous generation, though that data is not published yet. They also offer a four-year bearing warranty, which almost nobody else does. And before you get excited about the 45-tooth ratchet: I want to explain why higher tooth count is not always the right answer. Worth understanding before you spend the money.

848 grams for a complete wheelset. I held them and the number still surprised me. These are the Farsports Air2, their lightest set to date, priced at 11,000 RMB which is roughly $1,570. For that weight at that price, there is very little competition. Farsports knows exactly what they are doing here.

A 6.8-kilogram gravel bike. That is road bike territory, and this is running 35-millimeter tires. Evolve took everything they learned from the Cima and built a gravel version, then put it in a wind tunnel to prove the aero claims. The data is in their white paper. And then there are the Kreuza bolt-on TT extensions: one of the cleanest ways to put yourself in a TT position on a road or gravel bike that I saw anywhere at this show.

YOELEO redesigned their logo. I will be honest: it is not my favourite result. But the fact that they are listening to customer feedback and investing in design language and paint jobs is a genuinely good sign. A great product with a weak visual identity loses sales it deserves. YOELEO seems to understand that now. Progress.

Custom carbon cycling shoes that are literally shaped to your feet. Every millimeter of the sole moulded to your anatomy, and the tightening dial is at the bottom of the shoe because these are for indoor use only. The materials are premium, the construction is impressive. But at 1,200 euros, the real question is whether they are worth it. I want to know what you think.

I have seen a lot of frames at this show. Nothing prepared me for this. A 3D-printed titanium frame where the top tube is under half a centimeter wide and the seat tube is the thinnest I have ever seen on any production frame. That kind of geometry is only possible with 3D printing, and it shows. The frame weighs around 2.2 kilograms and costs around $10,000. Not the lightest, not the cheapest. But utterly unique.

I have looked at a lot of bikes this week. The Tavelo Arden paint job stopped me. Updated geometry with a raised cockpit for increased stack, 38-millimeter tire clearance that actually runs to 40, slimmer head and down tubes than the previous generation, and a wider bottom bracket area for stiffness. Built on L-Twoo with Cybrei chainrings. A bike that looks this good and rides like it should is a complete package.
