Capoeira in modern society is manifested as a cultural expression that involves wrestling, dancing, music, improvisation, philosophy and sport. The Brazilian art-form of Capoeira began as a martial art and as a means of self-defense for unarmed African slaves during the colonial era in

Brazil. Disguising the fight into dance, African slaves could practice it undisturbed before the eyes of their oppressors and guards. Beyond its roots in disguised self-defence Capoeira also served as a cultural expression of the “enslaved” that later evolved into a method of bodily and spiritual training .................................................... ...................................
