Look at this air pocket! 💀😱

30 metres below the surface and there it is. Not something you see every day. 🤯

As the Zenobia corrodes and the rust process takes hold, it actually consumes the oxygen inside the wreck over time. What’s left behind is mostly nitrogen, trapped in pockets where water can’t reach. Sealed in by the geometry of the wreck itself. 🌊🌊🌊

The result is these extraordinary pockets of trapped gas, sitting completely undisturbed inside a 45 year old shipwreck. Silent, eerie, and completely unexpected when you find one. 😎😎

And you can see the effect on the steel around it. Where the rust has done its work. Where the oxygen has been eaten away and only the nitrogen remains. The Zenobia is literally being consumed from the inside. Slowly. Quietly. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Here’s what sets the Zenobia apart from almost every other wreck in the world. She wasn’t scuttled. ⛴️⛴️

She went down intact. Cargo and all. A fully loaded RO-RO ferry that simply didn’t make it. No preparation, no stripping out, no controlled sinking. Just a ship, her cargo, and the moment everything went wrong. 🌊🌊🌊

There are countless wrecks out there. Empty shells. Hollow structures. Interesting enough to look at but with nothing left inside to tell a story. The Zenobia is not one of them. 🤯🤯

104 trucks. Vintage Playmobil. Fuel cards. A Lada with a Yugoslav bumper sticker. Colgate from 1980. Blue bottles floating on the ceiling. Rolled carpets in the lower deck. Cargo that was on its way somewhere and never arrived. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Don’t watch if you’re claustrophobic! 😱😱😱

6 days of technical dives on the Zenobia, finishing with what Mark dubbed the Blitzkrieg. 💪🏽💪🏽

And honestly, the name says it all. Narrow corridors, full overhead environment, pitch black. The kind of dive that demands absolute composure, solid skills, and complete trust in yourself and the water. No room for hesitation and no room full stop. 😅😅

Not a dive I take many people on. But Mark earned every single one of those 6 days and by the time we got here there was no question we were going. 💪🏽💪🏽

That’s the whole point. The big dives aren’t handed out. They’re built towards. Dive by dive, level by level, until the moment arrives where everything clicks and you find yourself somewhere most divers will never go. 🌊🌊🌊

The Auxiliary Engine Room. 😮‍💨

And there are no engines!! 🤯🤯

But let me tell you what was in here. Because the story of this room is the story of why the Zenobia is on the seabed. ⛴️⛴️⛴️

Diesel generators, air compressors, ballast pump control systems. The very systems that failed. A computerised fault that kept pumping water into the ballast tanks, gave her a list nobody could correct, and sent her to the bottom in 1980. This room is the heart of what went wrong. 🌊🌊🌊

It wasn’t even penetrated until July 2008. Nearly 30 years after she sank. 🤯🤯

This is not a dive you stumble into. It’s one you build towards. Dive by dive, skill by skill, until you’re ready to see the part of the Zenobia that most people never will. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
