Happy New Year everyone. I’ve had some time off from my blogs but I can’t stop at Proteins without talking about the other Macro Nutrients, namely carbs and fats. So this week is the turn of carbohydrates.

Carbs are an essential part of our diet and are not the root (excuse the pun) of all evil, that some people believe. I’ll go onto the reasons why in my blog but for now here are some fun facts about carbs:

* Cosmic Carbs: Even astronauts are in the carb club, munching on carb-rich goodies to stay energised among the stars.

* Pasta Monolith: Poland once whipped up a pasta dish so big it could have fed an entire space station!

* Spudnik: The humble potato is an interstellar traveller – it's the first veggie that sprouted in space.

* Sweet Potato, Not a Spud: Sweet potatoes are the chameleons of the carb world, more flower than potato. They are a dicotyledonous plant that belongs to the bindweed or morning glory family. Wow! Who knew!?

* Popcorn Time Travel: Next time you munch on popcorn, remember – you're enjoying a snack 5,600 years in the making!

* Rice Paddy Art: Japan's rice fields are doubling as art galleries with living, growing rice plant masterpieces.

* Cereal Illusion: Fruit Loops' secret? It's all one flavour – the rainbow just plays tricks on your taste buds!

* Pasta's Marco Polo Myth: Was pasta a Chinese import? Italy's been twirling spaghetti since the 1200s, but Marco Polo might have added a twist.

* Gummy Goliath: The world’s largest gummy bear weighs around 5 pounds and is the equivalent of 1,400 regular-sized gummy bears. It's a giant carb treat!

* Spaghetti Junctions: In some cities, roadways tangle up like a plate of spaghetti, but hopefully, they're less messy to navigate!

You’ve probably noticed that over the last several years, carbs have been getting a bad rap. To the point where people are avoiding what are perfectly healthy foods that provide an array of benefits. Back in the 1990’s people began blaming carbohydrates and bread for the skyrocketing obesity rat...

Discovering the Wonders of Protein: It's Not Just About Muscles!

Hey everyone! Let's explore the vital role of protein, a nutrient that's our essential for our health and wellbeing. 💪.

Did you know .....

🍗The Building Blocks of Life: Proteins are like the Lego blocks of our bodies, made from amino acids, essential for repairing and creating new cells. Whether it's building muscle, renewing skin, or just keeping our internal systems running smoothly, proteins are always at work!

🍤A Name with Greek Roots: The word Protein is from the Greek word 'proteios', meaning "primary" or "first place". This reflects the important role of protein in our health and life.

🥦 Protein's Role as We Age: For older adults, protein is crucial for maintaining muscle mass and strength, key factors for mobility and overall health. As we age, protein helps us stay active, independent, and full of life – truly embodying the spirit of adding 'life to our years'!

🫘 Titin (found in heart muscle)– The Gargantuan Protein: Prepare to be amazed – our bodies house the largest known protein, Titin. This protein is a true giant with a chemical name that is over 189,000 letters long! It's essential for muscle contraction and keeping our bodies moving.

So, let's give a round of applause to protein 👏 – the key to staying strong and vibrant at every stage of our lives.

Stay healthy, stay informed, and remember – it's about the life in your years!

I've decided to embark on a blog series exploring the Menopause journey and life beyond. For us women, menopause is a transformative period, characterised by a decline in reproductive hormones like oestrogen. This hormonal shift affects not just our immediate well-being but also exposes us to long-term health risks. In this series, I'll dive into the various symptoms that arise during menopause, how they can be managed, and what the post-menopausal landscape looks like in terms of disease susceptibility and preventative care.
Last week, I reached out for your questions and curiosities about this subject. One topic that popped up was the experience of dry, itchy skin after menopause—yes, it's a thing! Feel free to PM me if you have more questions or topics you'd like to see covered.
Please head to my website if you would like to read the introduction - link below.
