Happy New Year everyone. I’ve had some time off from my blogs but I can’t stop at Proteins without talking about the other Macro Nutrients, namely carbs and fats. So this week is the turn of carbohydrates.
Carbs are an essential part of our diet and are not the root (excuse the pun) of all evil, that some people believe. I’ll go onto the reasons why in my blog but for now here are some fun facts about carbs:
* Cosmic Carbs: Even astronauts are in the carb club, munching on carb-rich goodies to stay energised among the stars.
* Pasta Monolith: Poland once whipped up a pasta dish so big it could have fed an entire space station!
* Spudnik: The humble potato is an interstellar traveller – it's the first veggie that sprouted in space.
* Sweet Potato, Not a Spud: Sweet potatoes are the chameleons of the carb world, more flower than potato. They are a dicotyledonous plant that belongs to the bindweed or morning glory family. Wow! Who knew!?
* Popcorn Time Travel: Next time you munch on popcorn, remember – you're enjoying a snack 5,600 years in the making!
* Rice Paddy Art: Japan's rice fields are doubling as art galleries with living, growing rice plant masterpieces.
* Cereal Illusion: Fruit Loops' secret? It's all one flavour – the rainbow just plays tricks on your taste buds!
* Pasta's Marco Polo Myth: Was pasta a Chinese import? Italy's been twirling spaghetti since the 1200s, but Marco Polo might have added a twist.
* Gummy Goliath: The world’s largest gummy bear weighs around 5 pounds and is the equivalent of 1,400 regular-sized gummy bears. It's a giant carb treat!
* Spaghetti Junctions: In some cities, roadways tangle up like a plate of spaghetti, but hopefully, they're less messy to navigate!
