A quick, friendly reminder: keep your software updated 🔧
We know surveys keep you busy, and software updates can easily slip down your priority list. But taking a few minutes to install the latest version can make a real difference.

Every new release includes fixes and improvements — many of them based on issues reported by our users. Recently, we noticed that some problems reaching our support team had already been resolved in earlier updates.

We understand that it isn’t always easy to see what has changed without checking the release notes. That’s why, starting with this release, every update will include clear release notes explaining what’s new and how it can make your day-to-day work easier.

And good news — we’ve just released a fresh update! The current version is now 6️⃣.4️⃣.6️⃣. If you haven't updated recently, now is a great time to catch up — you may find that an issue you've been experiencing has already been fixed.

At SMM Hamburg, we had a chance to show what our approach to GMDSS testing looks like today. Now that the exhibition is over, here's where we're taking it next.

For us, professional radio testing has never been just about the instrument itself.

The measurement is only one part of the survey process. There is also the work around it: checking results against applicable requirements, organising survey data, preparing reports, keeping vessel and equipment history, and planning what comes next.

Over the past year, we've been gradually bringing more of that process into GMDSS Multi Software.

Earlier updates introduced a more structured way to enter and organise survey data, along with dynamic reports, survey history and automatic comparison of measurements with applicable reference limits.

Now we're taking that further.

We're developing GMDSS Multi Software into a more complete working environment for the radio survey process — connecting measurements, compliance checks, survey records, reporting, documentation and planning in one workflow.

In other words, we're moving toward a workflow where the tester and GMDSS Multi Software work together to:

MEASURE → ANALYSE → REPORT → TRACK → PLAN

Hardware stays at the core. Reliable measurements and meaningful diagnostic data remain essential.

But the goal is to make sure the information collected during a survey doesn't remain an isolated result. It should stay connected to the vessel, the equipment and the survey history — and remain useful all the way through reporting and into the next visit.

👉 This fall, we'll continue rolling out updates to GMDSS Multi Software — with more of this workflow coming together step by step.

In May 2026, IMO adopted amendments to SOLAS Chapters IV and V introducing VDES as an alternative to AIS. The Committee also adopted revised Performance Standards for shipborne VDES. The new regulations are expected to enter into force on 1 January 2028.

But before VDES becomes part of everyday onboard operations, there is another practical question to solve:

How will it be tested?

That answer is now taking shape.

IEC 63514, the emerging requirements and test standard for shipborne VDES, has reached its third Committee Draft (3CD), with publication as an International Standard expected in 2027.

That gives the industry an important window: the technical basis for VDES testing is becoming clear, but the standard is not yet final.

We're using that time now.

Our engineering team is already aligning the VDES testing architecture for the MRTS-7 Pro with the ASM, VDE-TER and VDE-SAT requirements defined in the current IEC 63514 draft.

The goal is not simply to add another testing capability. It's to make extending today's established AIS testing workflows to VDES as practical as possible for the engineers and surveyors doing the work.

Because the real question isn't whether VDES is coming. It's whether the tools to test it will be ready when it does.

First of all, do not try to switch it on “just to check if it still works.”
Saltwater can remain inside the device and continue damaging electronic components even after the outside looks completely dry. Applying power too soon may turn recoverable damage into a serious failure.

Here is what we recommend doing as soon as possible:

REMOVE AND DISCONNECT:
🔸 The main battery
🔸 The internal clock battery
🔸 All connected plugs and connectors
🔸 The antenna and any attached cables

If the device is being handled by a qualified technician, the circuit boards should also be removed and carefully cleaned. Use isopropyl alcohol to clean the printed circuit boards and all connectors.

Before reassembly, allow every component to dry thoroughly and make sure there is no moisture left inside the device.

PLEASE DO NOT:
🔸 Switch the tester on
🔸 Reconnect the main or clock battery
🔸 Connect the device to a charger
🔸 Remove the display
🔸 Wash the tester under running water
🔸 Use solvents
🔸 Use ultrasonic cleaning
🔸 Apply strong mechanical force
🔸 Blow compressed air into the device at high pressure

A standard can of compressed air may be used carefully, but high-pressure workshop equipment can push moisture deeper into connectors and sensitive components.

Even when the tester appears dry, corrosion may already be developing in areas that are difficult to see. We strongly recommend having the device inspected before reconnecting the batteries or applying power.

Acting quickly and resisting the temptation to test the device immediately can significantly improve its chances of recovery.
