Learn to surf from the best female surf coach in Costa Rica.

Andrea Diaz has been empowering women and girls with surfing (along with a few boys and men too!) for over 15 years. Sharing the gift of surfing is her passion. Andrea can introduce you to the basics or refine your technique. Regardless of your level, Andrea creates a safe, body positive environment where you can learn, explore and open your mind and body to new possibilities! A city girl originally from San Jose, Costa Rica, Diaz Coto didn't touch a surfboard until she was 16. A former competitive swimmer, she took to the sport naturally. But in the early 1990s, women were still the minority in the ocean. "Early on, I remember paddling out and having a blonde French dude tell me women shouldn't be in the lineup," she says. "I knew I needed to change the status quo."

Diaz Coto learned to let her surfing do the talking and soon became recognized and respected for her fearless, hard-charging style. After becoming the first woman to grace the cover of Surfos, the most prominent Latin America surf magazine at the time, she was picked up as a Roxy team rider and went on to become Costa Rica's first female surfing national champion.

Now 46 and a single mother of three children, cool fact: Lia her oldest became national champ of her division the same year Andrea became a champ of hers. she coaches rather than competes and is considered one of the top surf educators in the country. "Women have a different teaching style," she says. "We take more time to break down technique and help [surfers] find the sweet spot of a wave."
-Jen Murphy for Travel & Leisure

Andrea prioritizes surfers’ wellbeing in and out of the water. Lessons are kept small with no more than 2 to 3 people per coach. Small intimate groups keep your time in the water meaningful and focused.

Meet Lia Díaz.
She started surfing at four, long before any of this was part of the plan.
What followed was years in the ocean. Competing. Falling. Learning. Getting back up. And eventually, almost unexpectedly, finding her place on a longboard.
There’s a part of this story that podium photos don’t show.
Coming from a small country like Costa Rica, pursuing a professional surfing career takes more than talent. Every opportunity comes with a price tag — flights, boards, entry fees, places to stay, another country, another event.
Sometimes the hardest part isn’t earning your place. It’s finding a way to get there.
And this is where Lia’s story belongs to more than Lia.
Years ago, some of the first people to help fund her dream were women who had come to Costa Rica to surf at our Retreats.
They had watched this little girl grow up around the ocean, believed in where she might go, and quietly helped her take some of those first steps.
Since then, friends, clients, businesses, sponsors and people who simply believed in her have helped carry this dream a little farther.
To every person who bought a raffle ticket, sponsored a trip, opened a door, shared a contact, offered a place to stay, or simply said “keep going” — thank you.
You are part of this story too.
In 2026, Lia became the first Costa Rican to qualify for the WSL Longboard Tour.
A little girl from Costa Rica made it onto the world stage.
Not alone.
Not without struggle.
And definitely not without a whole lot of people believing she could.
Now she gets to see how far this wave will take her.
Meet Lia Hermosa Diaz — surfer, coach, proud Costa Rican, and part of the heart behind Living Pura Vida.

Turns out, living well is kinda chic.

Salt water. Strong bodies. Curious minds. Good people. Taking care of the places that take care of us.

And never, ever being too old to learn something new.

We’re into it.

Most people are learning to longboard…
from shortboard logic.

That’s the problem.

A shortboard is like a dirt bike—fast, reactive, aggressive.

A longboard is a Harley.
You don’t force it.
You guide it.

And if you don’t step back…
it won’t turn.

Surfing will confront you.

Your patience.
Your fear.
Your expectations.

And sometimes…

it’s just you, floating there, waiting.

That’s where the real work begins.
I don’t coach just the wave.

I coach everything that happens around it.

If you’re looking for a more intentional way to surf Costa Rica,
there’s space here.

Nos encanta decir que somos un país verde.
Pero cada vez se parece más a un eslogan vacío.

Crecimos defendiendo algo claro:

🌊 Surfing truly runs in our family ❤️
I’m Andrea Díaz — A former Costa Rican National Champion.
Now I get the joy of coaching and running retreats with my daughter , who is the current Costa Rica National Longboard Champion and recent North America winner.
Through , we offer private coaching and intimate Ocean Lineage retreats right here in our home country.
We’re a local Costa Rican family — not another foreign-run surf camp. We know these waves, these tides, and this coastline like our own backyard. We’ve grown up here, and we pour that deep local knowledge into every session and every retreat we lead.
Whether you’ve never stood up on a wave before or you’ve been surfing for years and want to feel more confident and connected… we welcome you with open hearts.
We keep it small, patient, and soulful. Real progression, real Pura Vida.
If something in you feels called to join us in the water, just DM me “LESSON” or “RETREAT” and I’ll personally send you all the details.
With love from the lineup 🌊

Still celebrating an incredible weekend for our team.

just won the Costa Rica National Championship in the longboard mixed division — men and women —, and also placed 2nd in shortboard, catching the highest wave of her heat.

Lia is not only one of Costa Rica’s most versatile surfers, but also a lead coach within our Living Pura Vida Surf programs, working closely with surfers during our retreats and coached surf weeks.

Seeing that same level of commitment in both competition and coaching is something we’re incredibly proud of.

Congratulations Lia — and thank you for inspiring the next generation of surfers.

Pura vida.

For intermediate women surfers who feel stuck on that plateau —

I’m hosting a small longboard immersion in Southern Costa Rica this September.

It’s capped at eight surfers and focused on refinement, repetition, and real progression in the water — not a party retreat or vacation camp.

If this resonates, happy to share details.

September 6–12.
