The CVGA

The CVGA The Central Valley Golf Association of Costa Rica Many top players from throughout the country, and more distant locations, come to this event.

Founded in 1998 by a small group of dedicated golfers looking for a way to make their golfing experience more meaningful, the Central Valley Golf Association enters 2016 with a thriving membership of more than 150 players committed more firmly than ever to its founding principles: "To promote the game of golf in Costa Rica and to organize various golfing events for the pleasure of the participants

". The most important event of the year is the CVGA Open tournament, lunch, awards presentation and raffle - held the first Tuesday in December. CVGA Membership is open to all residents and visitors who may not live in Costa Rica but who return, from time to time, for business or pleasure, and want to support golf in the country, as well as The CVGA. Because Costa Rica is such a magnet for business world travelers and tourists, the current CVGA membership roster reads like a United Nations list of delegates. During 2010, players from twenty-four different countries join us in our tournaments at Valle del Sol Golf Course. There is no membership fee to join The CVGA - regular players and visitors pay for their green fee and contribute a small amount of money (approximately $12.00) before playing, which creates a small purse to be divided among the winning golfers on that day of friendly competition (a small portion is kept by the association for the monthly " Texas Scramble " as well as for the CVGA Open. This small contribution also helps cover the cost of maintaining an official USGA handicap for the members and a ticket to the annual CVGA Open, a highlight event which ends the golfing year in style. Hello,

On Tuesday April 16th the CVGA played a Two-Person scramble. Teams of two played the best ball every shot until the ball was in the hole. Each partner was required to contribute 3 drives per 9 holes, and at the end the scores were reduced by 30% of combined handicaps. As we had an odd number of players we had one team of three, and that team had their scores reduced by only 15%.

It was a windy day and the flag sticks were in difficult positions. As a result I thought the scores were a little higher than usual.

With 23 players and 11 teams we will pay out the top 3 teams - c70,000 for 1st, c 38,000 for 2nd and c18,000 for 3rd.

Closest to the Pin

Richard Manthorne was closest to the Pin on Hole #5 and wins c6000 as a result.

Closest Chip

Joe Maggio made the closest chip on Hole #4 and also wins c6000.

Next Week

The format next week will be a regular Stableford tournament.

My Last Week

Hello,

On Tuesday April 9th the CVGA played a two-person best ball tournament. Teams of two played their balls through from tee to hole and then used the best net score each hole as the team score.

The rainy season has started and the fairways were a little greener than they have been in some time. There was very little breeze, and it was coming from a different direction than it has been over the past few months. It was nearly perfect golf weather.

We had 19 players. Tony Maggio was the extra person and Eleazar Hernandez was named his partner after a blind draw. With ten teams we pay out the top three teams - c56,000 for 1st place, c30,000 for 2nd and c16,000 for third.

Closest to the Pin

Dan Chiverton was closest to the pin on Hole 17 and wins c6000 as a result.

Closest Chip

Phil O'Cleigh made the closest chip on Hole 18. He wins c6000 for his shot.

Next Week

The format for next week will be a two-person scramble. Everyone is welcome, be at Valle del Sol between 6-7:00 am. If you do not have a partner come anyway and we will find one for you.

On Tuesday April 2nd the CVGA played a Modified Stableford tournament. Players earned 1 point for a bogey, 2 points for a par, 4 points for a birdie and 8 points for an eagle. Handicaps were taken into account at the end of the round and the player with the highest score at the end won.

It was a breezy but sunny day, and the greenskeeper had the course set up easy due to the Sheraton tournament that happened on the weekend. There were some good scores as a result.

With 14 players we split the group into two flights: handicaps of 22 and lower, and handicaps of 23 and higher. 1st place in each flight earned c23,000 and 2nd place c13,000.

Hole in One!

On Hole #7, Mickey van Waasbergen hit one of her usual low, straight tee shots. It landed on the front of the green and kept rolling, rolling, rolling to the yellow pin at the back right corner of the green until it dropped gently into the hole, without even hitting the flag stick - a Hole in One!

Mickey's birthday is today (Wednesday) and she turns 81. Congratulations Mickey, and Happy Birthday!

Closest to the Pin

Bobby Locke hit his ball closest to the pin on hole #5 and won c6000 as a result.

Closest Chip

Chuck Colton hit his chip on Hole #18 closer than anyone else, and also won c6000.

Next Week

Next Week we will play a 2-person Best Ball tournament. Everyone is welcome, if you do not have a partner we will find one for you when you arrive at the course. If there is an odd number of players we will have a blind draw for partner.

Newcomers are welcome, join us on Tuesday's at Valle del Sol golf course between 6-7:00am. CVGA players receive a special discounted rate on green fees. See you soon!

On Tuesday March 26 the CVGA played a regular Stableford tournament. In a Stableford, players earn 1 point for a net bogey, 2 points for a net par, 3 points for a net birdie and 4 points for a net eagle. We then deduct 36 from the total scores to get the final score, and the player with the highest score wins.

This week we had 20 players, so we divided the group into two flights - Handicap 22 and under and Handicap 23 and over. 1st place in each flight received c30,000, 2nd place c16,000 and 3rd place c8000.

It was very windy, and as a result there were not many good scores. Ties were broken by the most points on the last 9 holes.

Closest to the Pin

Mike Crowe was closest to the pin on Hole #17 and wins c6000 as a result.

Closest Chip

Ed Bryan made the closest chip on hole #9 and also wins c6000.

Next Week

Next week we will play a Modified Stableford tournament.

Hello,

On Tuesday March 12th the CVGA tried something new: a two day event. This Tuesday we played a Two-Person Scramble, and next Tuesday we will play a Two-Person Best Ball.

In a Scramble, teams of two players each hit from the position of the best shot. Both players drive every hole, but each player in the team must contribute at least three drives per nine holes.

We had nine teams of two players, and other than the top team and the bottom team we had some close scores.

Next week we will play a Two-Person Best Ball tournament using 100% of handicaps.

If you did not play this week please do come out next week. We will put you on a team and make it right if you should win a prize.

Closest to the Pin

Ed Bryan was closest to the pin on Hole 7 and wins c6000.

Closest Chip

Nixie Guevara made the closest chip on Hole 9 and wins c6000.

I will see you on the course!

Hello,

On Tuesday March 5th the CVGA played a Modified Stableford tournament. Players earned 1 point for each bogey, 2 points for each par, 4 points for each birdie and 8 points for an eagle. The total points were added to the handicap for each player and we deducted 36 from that score to get a final score. In a Modified Stableford, high scores are good!

It was a calm, sunny day with hard, fast fairways and slow, soft greens. As a result we had a lot of good scores.

We had 18 golfers so we split the group into two flights - handicap 23 and under and handicap 24 and over. 1st place earned c28,000, 2nd place c15,000 and 3rd place c8000.

Closest to the Pin

Chuck Colton hit the ball closest to the pin on hole #5 and wins c6000 as a result.

Closest Chip

David Waddelow made the closest chip on hole #2 and wins a CVGA shirt.

Next Week

We are going to try something different over the next couple of weeks - a two-day tournament. Next Tuesday will be day 1 and we will play a Two Person scramble, and on Tuesday March 19 we will play a Two Person Best Ball. We will use the total combined scores from both weeks to determine the winners.

If you do not have a partner please come and we will find a partner for you. If you are only able to make it one week please come anyway and if you have a good round the week you come we will award you a fair portion of the prize pool for your round.

I will see you on the course.

Hello,

On Tuesday February 19th the CVGA played a Six Six Six tournament. Teams of two played six holes of scramble, six holes of best ball and then six holes of alternate shot. Teams used their gross scores on each hole and then we deducted their total scores by 30% of combined handicaps.

We had 23 players which meant we had 11 teams. There was one team of three players and they were only permitted to use 15% of combined handicaps. With 11 teams we paid out the top three teams - c70,000 for 1st place, c38,000 for 2nd place and c18,000 for 3rd place.

Closest to the Pin

Richard Manthorne was closest to the pin on hole #15 and wins c6000.

Louie Allec made the closest chip on hole #2 and also wins c6000.

Next Week

The format next week will be a Stableford. Players use their NET score on each hole and earn 1 point for a NET bogey, 2 points for a NET par, 3 points for a NET birdie and 4 points for a NET eagle.

On Tuesday February 12th the CVGA played a Modified Stableford tournament using full handicaps. Players earned 1 point for a bogey, 2 points for a par, 4 points for a birdie and 8 points for an eagle. Their total points were then added to the handicap and 36 was subtracted from that score to get the net score.

We had 19 players today, and as a result we split the group into two flights - Handicap 20 and lower and 23 and higher. We paid out the top three players in each flight: c28,000 for 1st, c15,000 for 2nd and c8000 for 3rd.

Although it was windy, a number of the tee boxes were moved up and I expected there would be some good scores today as a result. I was correct. Ties were broken by most points on last 9 holes, then last 6 holes, then last 3 holes.

Closest to the Hole

Tony Maggio was closest to the hole on Hole 7 and wins c6000.

Closest Chip

Dan Chiverton made the closest chip on Hole 3 and wins c6000.

Next Week

Next week we will try something different - Six, 6, Six. This format requires teams of two and 30% of combined handicaps are used.

Holes 1-6 are played as a scramble with each partner contributing at least two drives.

Holes 7-12 are a best ball, where each player plays their own ball through the end of the hole and the team uses the best GROSS score.

Holes 13-18 is alternate shot: each partner tees off and then the team selects one drive to use. The player that did not hit the drive takes the next shot and the team continues to alternate shots until the ball is in the hole. Each partner must contribute at least two drives.

If there is an odd number of players we will have one team of three and 15% of handicaps will be used.

I will see you on the course.

Hello,

On Tuesday February 5th the CVGA played a two-person scramble tournament. Each partner teed off and the team continued playing from the best shot each time until the ball was in the hole. Each partner was required to contribute three drives per nine holes.

It was a windy day and I felt a few of the flags were in tricky spots. I thought the scores were a little higher than we might normally see for this format.

We had a good turnout of 22 players for eleven teams of two. As a result we will pay out the top three teams: c66,000 for 1st, c36,000 for 2nd and c18,000 for 3rd. We used 30% of handicaps and rounded the scores to the nearest tenth.

Closest to the Pin

Larry Goldman was closest to the pin on Hole #5 and won c6000.

Closest Chip

Bobby Locke made the closest chip on hole #3 and won c6000.

The format next week will be Modified Stableford. Everyone is welcome, new players are welcome!

Hello,

On Tuesday January 29th the CVGA played a Modified Stableford tournament. Players earned 1 point for each bogey, two points for each par, four points for a birdie and eight points for an eagle. At the end the total points was compared to the target score for each player (36 - handicap) and the player with the highest net score was the winner.

The weather was nearly perfect for golf, which may be why we had so many very good scores today.

With 19 players we divided the group into two flights - handicaps 20 and lower and 23 and higher. The top three players in each flight will be paid out - c30,000 for 1st, c16,000 for 2nd and c8000 for third. Ties are broken by most points on final 9 holes, then final 6 holes, then final 3 holes.

Closest to the Pin

Fabrizio Poletti hit the flag stick today on hole #17 and his ball came to rest about a foot from the hole. He earns c6000 for being closest to the pin.

Closest Chip

David Waddelow made the closest chip on Hole #3 and has earned himself a CVGA golf shirt.

Next Week

The format for next week will be a Two Person Scramble. Teams will use 30% of combined handicaps and each partner will be required to contribute three drives per nine holes. If you do not have a partner please come and we will find someone for you to play with. In the event we have an odd number of players we will have one team of three and that team will use 15% of combined handicaps, with each partner contributing at least five drives for the round.
