Whale shark spots form stable, individual-specific patterns that allow scientists to identify and track the same animal over time. These markings are used in photo-ID databases to study migration routes, site fidelity, growth rates, and population size without tagging or handling the animal. Because the spot patterns do not change significantly as whale sharks age, even photos taken years apart can be reliably matched, making them a critical tool for non-invasive research and conservation.
