Many of you Business Professionals have been mentioning to me how you’re hesitating in English meetings.
This is because you are overly fearful about making mistakes, which is stopping you from speaking up.
This is a problem, however.
As you know, you need to be contributing your ideas and expertise in these meetings, not only so your clients can benefit from your guidance, but also so that you can share ideas and strategies with your fellow colleagues.
I wanted to share a few tips today to help you overcome this barrier.
1. Care less about making mistakes, care more about communicating clearly
We usually worry that people will judge us if we make mistakes in English. This is rarely the case, however, and even native speakers make mistakes. What matters more than anything is that you’re able to get your message across clearly. People won’t be focusing on every little mistake you make, so don’t let that hold you back.
2. Broaden your vocabulary
I’ve also learned from you guys that you aren’t speaking up in meetings because you lack enough vocabulary to express your ideas. Broaden your vocabulary by keeping a vocabulary journal to keep track of new words and expand your understanding. Also, try to learn synonyms, so that you express specific meanings that are more nuanced.
3. Practice beforehand
Practice what you want to say in the meeting before it takes place. You can practice in the mirror or with a friend. You will go into the meeting with more peace of mind after having done a dry run of the thoughts you want to share or the topics you know you need to speak about in that meeting.
