1346.8.26-2022.8.26
Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Crecy – fought on 26th August 1346.
Here, John, Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia, leads his division into the attack, coming desperately close to success, penetrating the centre of the Prince of Wales’ position and briefly overturning the English banner. Nevertheless, after a bitter struggle the gallant, old and near-blind Count of Luxembourg was killed, along with his closest companions, and the survivors of the division was forced to retreat.
This is one of four paintings I created back in 1999 for the Osprey book about the battle. This original sold long ago, but one other original from 'Crecy 1346' remains available – see https://www.studio88.co.uk/acatalog/Late_Medieval.html for details.
