What do we want and when do we want it?
It seems that everyone now agrees that the level of development in historic cars has reached an unsustainable level, with various - and highly negative - consequences. First and foremost, budgets have skyrocketed in recent years, and many competitors are unable to keep up. Naturally, this is reflected in the number of cars appearing on the grids.
To remedy this when the FIA Historic Committee met in Paris in February, it proposed the idea of a ‘Roadmap’ that would set out a series of steps to bring the cars back to a configuration closer to their period specification. One of the first steps would be to enhance Appendix K, so that it included more details of what is, and is not, permitted. It would specifically prohibit out-of-period technology. This would be accomplished over time so that competitors would have time to adjust to the new arrangements.
When the Committee met again in May, the Roadmap was presented to them with the proviso they keep it confidential until June when it would be presented for approval by the World Council. This came as somewhat of a surprise, as Committee members had assumed they would have some input into the document.
This will now be presented to the FIA World Council, for approval. Only once it has been approved will the FIA share its contents with the rest of us.
We at HMRN, and the Historic Motorsport Association would like your opinion on certain matters that we believe should be dealt with in the as-yet, confidential document. The findings of this survey are important as they will represent a cross section of opinion within the active participants and those with an interest in the sport and will serve to inform and influence what the next steps should be. Please pass the link along and encourage anyone with an interest to fill out the survey.
This applies to all of us, from every country and every continent. The more people who participate the the better informed we will be, so please take the survey and encourage others to do so. We will publish the results.
