We tend to use “I’m managing” as evidence that things are okay.

But managing is an output.

It tells us that the work got done, the children got where they needed to go, the calendar held together and life kept moving.

It tells us very little about what it took to make that happen, or what would happen if tomorrow asked for more.

That’s a different leadership question.

Not: Can I keep all of this going?

But: What does the life I’m leading actually have room for?

Because a life can be functioning beautifully on the surface and still be operating with almost no margin.

And once we start seeing that, we can stop looking at each part of life separately and start seeing the system we’re actually leading.

Mothers are leaders. Motherhood is leadership.

We use leadership language everywhere except motherhood.

Prioritisation.
Trade-offs.
Resource allocation.
Decision-making under constraint.

At work, we recognise these as leadership skills.

At home, mothers make these decisions every day, often while believing they should simply be getting better at “managing it all.”

Maybe we’ve been naming the work wrong.

Motherhood isn’t just something to manage.
It’s something we lead.

And mothers are already leading.

We often talk about the skills motherhood gives women and how those skills can make us better leaders at work.

But that still makes work the place where those skills become “leadership.”

What if we stopped doing that?

Motherhood itself requires us to prioritise, allocate finite resources, make decisions under constraint, negotiate, adapt and lead through uncertainty.

Motherhood doesn’t just prepare us for leadership.

Motherhood is leadership.

One of the ideas I keep coming back to with Mum Shift is this:

We’ve been taught to organise our lives in categories, but not to make decisions across them.

We have tools for work.
Routines for the kids.
Plans for exercise.
Budgets for money.
Calendars for everything.

And then we wonder why managing each part “well” still doesn’t necessarily make life feel manageable.

Because the real leadership challenge happens between the parts.

Taking on more at work might be absolutely the right decision, but it changes what is available elsewhere.

Adding another activity for the children might be wonderful, but it still requires time, logistics and attention.

Even good things create demand.

That doesn’t mean we should constantly do less.

It means we need to get better at seeing the whole picture before deciding what it can carry.

That’s the shift I want to explore much more here:

Not How do I become more efficient at doing it all?

But What deserves capacity in my life, and what doesn’t?

That, to me, is Life Leadership.

We call them “mum skills.”

Prioritising. Decision-making. Resource allocation. Managing competing demands.

But put those exact same skills into a workplace and suddenly they have different names.

Leadership skills.

Maybe mothers don’t need to learn to become leaders.

Maybe we need to start recognising the leadership that is already happening — every single day.

At work. At home. In life.

Mothers are leaders.
Motherhood is leadership.

You know that feeling?

You come back from holiday rested… and within 48 hours you’re wondering how you ever managed all of this before.

The inbox is full.
The laundry is waiting.
School is starting again.
The fridge is empty.
There are appointments, decisions, messages, deadlines.

And suddenly, the holiday feels very far away.

But maybe the goal isn’t to catch up with everything.

Because when everything comes back at once, you’re doing what leaders do when demand exceeds available resources:

You prioritise.
You make trade-offs.
You decide where your time, attention and energy go first.

We tend to call that “getting life back under control.”

There’s another name for it:

Resource allocation.

Another “mum skill” that isn’t a mum skill at all.

It’s a leadership skill.

Mothers are leaders. We just need to start recognising the leadership that’s already there.
