Chris Oh is back! 🍾 And today, he’s breaking down one of the essentials every showgirl and burlesque performer needs to know: the proper showgirl pose, including the iconic burlesque bevel. ✨

It’s one of those basics every beginner should learn, but honestly, it never hurts to revisit it, no matter how long you’ve been doing burlesque. 💋 Let’s refresh the basics and repeat: legs in one line, abs, chest, shoulders, showgirl. 🔥💃🏻

Who knew your fingers had this much personality? 👋🏼✨

In Part I, we talked about how the middle finger can make your movements softer, longer and more sensual. But it’s definitely not the only finger with a role to play on stage.

Your index finger? She’s the sparkly girl-next-door. 💖 Point at your shoes, your cheek, your bum – it instantly adds a playful, cheeky innocence to your movement.

Your thumb? That’s your rock’n’roll finger. 🤘🏼 A little rougher, a little rebellious, maybe even a little gangster. Use it to grab, pull, smudge and mess things up.

The fun part is that none of these movements need to be big. Simply changing which finger leads a gesture can completely change the character you’re portraying.

And that’s what I love about burlesque: learning how to make even the tiniest movement intentional. 🔎

Editing your act music isn’t just about making two songs fit together. It’s part of the storytelling! 🎭🎶

In Part 2, we’re looking at your soundtrack from a performer’s perspective: using musical changes for reveals and choreography, adding sound effects and creating an atmosphere that makes your act feel uniquely yours.

The goal isn’t a technically perfect edit. Rather, you’re creating a soundtrack that gives you something to perform to. 💃🏻

Save this for your next act – and don’t be afraid to experiment!

Unsure how to edit your music for stage? This two-part tutorial will help you get started! 💪🏼🎉

In Part 1, we’re covering the technical basics: counting your music, reading the waveform, making clean cuts and creating smooth transitions between songs – all with free software like Audacity. ✂️

Save this for your next act and stay tuned for Part 2, where we get creative with it. 👀

Your burlesque portfolio is often the first impression a producer gets of you – so make it count. 💪🏼

A good portfolio isn’t about having the most elaborate website or the fanciest design. It’s about making it easy for producers to answer three simple questions:

💜 Who are you?
🎭 What do you perform?
📩 How can they book you?

The easier you make those answers to find, the easier it is for producers to imagine you in their show. 💖

Do you already have a performer portfolio? If so, what’s one thing you’ve found especially useful – or one thing you wish you’d included sooner? 🤔 Share your tips below so we can help each other build stronger applications. 🫶🏻

For the love of God (and burlesque!), please DON’T do this:

❌ Don’t let your foot do “the thing” where it just flops onto the floor like a discarded banana. Instead, press the back of your foot into the floor and point those toes for your life!

❌ Don’t collapse into your shoulders or hunch your back. Instead, actively press your hands into the floor, push yourself away from it, stabilize your shoulders, and arch your back as much as you can. The difference is everything.

These tiny details completely transform the way your movement looks. Trust me – they’ll also save your burlesque teacher from making some very... expressive facial reactions. 🧐😂
