Limiting beliefs do not often reveal themselves overtly. Many people ask me how they can know if they even have limiting beliefs.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Well, I can share my experience. I didn’t think I had limiting beliefs and was convinced that the external reality was responsible for most problems.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But who taught me that reality is that way? This is exactly the point: it's your belief system that assigns meaning to situations. And of course, limiting beliefs don’t just wave and say, “Hey, I’m one of your limiting beliefs!” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Limiting beliefs manifest as a trusted internal voice, the one you’ve been hearing in your head as far back as you can remember -- but which has never really done much to help you in the long term. This voice never empowers you. This voice looks for any reason to avoid things it believes aren’t good for you, and the only source of its arguments is your belief system.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So if you want to find out what your limiting beliefs are, the first thing you need to do is observe yourself: what you think and feel and how you behave -- and then challenge those results.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Start with one behavior and track it back to the emotion and thought that triggered it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What argument do you make for that behavior? What is your reasoning? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Journal these questions and answers and notice what emerges. Apply conscious reasoning and then rewrite the answers in more empowering terms. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I know I’m like a broken record, always writing about the subconscious mind but it’s because I believe lasting change only happens when we consciously and consistently repeat our intentions and choices.

New clients often tell me that no matter what they do, they always seem to fall back into old habits. They lose faith in their ability to change when they repeatedly experience setbacks and ask if I myself ever feel angry, sad or anxious.

Of course I face these issues too. Everybody stumbles from time to time; we are human beings, not robots.

The subconscious mind is a record of the past. It is the repository for all our  adopted beliefs and rules; it hosts our shadow and together with the survival mind, ensures our safety. Essentially, the subconscious uses information from the past to predict the future.

All of this exists in the brain as neurologically-hardwired networks of neurons and when thought patterns are repeatedly used, these cable-like electrical pathways become information superhighways.

Whenever we decide to make a change, we create a new neurological connection that is similar to a dirt road. Moving information along this path is not comfortable or efficient at first, and resistance to using this network instead of easier, more established ones is to be expected; particularly when we take into consideration that the brain’s modus operandi is efficiency.

But the more often we choose the new road, the stronger its structure becomes and the less resistance the brain experiences. As the new neurological pathway grows, the former disintegrates.

When we experience a stressful situation though, the subconscious mind takes over and will use habitual networks to operate the flight-or-fight program. This is how we fall back into old behavior.

I know it’s not good news, but we can’t just swap new cables for old ones.

You got to do the work :)

Most of the time when I talk to people, they tell me, “I’m stressed; I have so much to do. But when I have completed this task my stress level will go down.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Guess what? When the task is completed the stress level of that person will most probably not go down. Why? Because the internal program in their head that’s causing the stress will automatically find something else to stress about.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Stress has different sources and many of these are due to unresolved traumas and their coping mechanisms striking in adult life.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Have you ever asked yourself what’s really behind your stress response, especially when there is no imminent danger? What is driving your response in that moment?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The list on the graphic is not at all conclusive. Many stress triggers are deeply rooted in the subconscious and run constantly.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

But understanding what causes your stress is half the battle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The result of asking the wrong questions is like getting bad directions: you get lost. Wrong answers create a negative emotional state that immediately saps energy and creativity. Questions set our mental focus and we all know that where focus goes, energy flows.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you ask yourself questions like, “Why does this always happen to me?” What do you think your brain will answer? Depending on your belief system, you might get answers like, “Because I deserve it,” or, “Because this is not for me.” How do those replies make you feel? I would guess totally down and limited.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But if, in the same situation, you ask questions like, “What can I do to turn this around?” and, “What are my options?” Your brain will give you different ideas and answers and new doors will open for you. Your brain is now looking for ways to get back on track. And how would this make you feel? Probably much more energized and motivated because you now see more options and possibilities.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Questions determine whether or not you squander your energy in victim mode or move powerfully into creator mode.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Try it now! Think of a current difficult situation in your life and ask the first of the two (Try) questions at the bottom of the graphic and notice how you feel. Then ask yourself the follow-up question. Now how do you feel? What is the difference?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is the potential of questions and answers. Make powerful questions a new habit. It’s a little change that will have a big impact in your life.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Allow me to ask you this question: What do you believe counts most in life and is true for you?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Regardless of your answer, whatever you believe to be true defines your reality, no matter what others think or say.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The only thing that really does matter is what is stored in your belief system. That information is what your mind uses to confirm that everything you believe continues to appear true.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For example: if you believe that people are essentially bad, your mind will constantly scan for individuals or groups who make you feel bad. And it won’t stop until you find them because it needs evidence to validate your established belief system.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The same goes if you believe you aren’t ever going to be the best version of yourself: your mind will always remind you of situations and experiences when you failed, and instead of telling you that failure is a vital part of learning, it will instead tell you that you’re just not capable of growth and increasing success.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The only thing standing between you and your dreams is your own belief system and the rules you have integrated to confirm those beliefs.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you agree?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You’ve got to begin by telling a different story. What do you WANT to believe about yourself and your dreams/goals? Identify these limiting thoughts by writing them down and dismantle them by asking yourself the right questions.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What does your mind say to you when you have a big dream or a challenging goal?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Think about your dream and write down all the thoughts that pop up. Do you want to be that person that your mind is describing?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let us know in the comments: What does your mind tell you when you think about your personal vision, dream or goal?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Have you ever used the GPS on your phone? If you don’t program it with the precise destination you don’t get where you want to go. You will probably just run in circles and if you do reach your destination, it’s only after wasting a lot of energy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Your brain works the same way. If you don’t program it with your destination, it doesn’t know where to go. And in situations like this it does what it does best: create worst-case scenarios.😊⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The solution is simple; give your brain the coordinates, or in other words, set a clear goal.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Make the goal as tangible as possible by creating an image in your mind with the help of your senses.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What does your goal look like? (Visual) What do you hear? (Audio) What do you want to feel, smell and taste? (Kinesthetic, olfactory and gustatory)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

By walking through your goals, you mentally build a powerful network which impels you towards it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It’s great to have big goals but if they’re unmanageable, split them into more digestible milestones. It’s much the same as how you’d plan a long journey with pit-stops. As you reach them, visually check them off your list.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Do you have an image of your goals in mind?

The subconscious mind controls 95% of our life. Without it it would be impossible to manage our day-to-day activities.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The brain creates neurological connections that automate repetitive behaviors so that we can get on with our external actions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This autopilot feature regulates bodily functions while we are busy with other tasks. It allows us to walk and talk at the same time without running into lamp posts. It even drives our car for us while we are thinking about other things! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unfortunately though, the automation doesn’t only happen for things that empower us; more limiting activities are also automated.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For example, the subconscious automates limiting language patterns such as, “I don’t know how to do this.” When we repeat statements, even ones as seemingly innocuous as this, the brain internalizes a literal meaning and applies it across any remotely similar situation. The outcome then is that we become so inundated with mental resistance that we don’t even bother challenging ourselves anymore.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The same goes for behaviors. The more negative internal commentary we have, the more the brain automates the result.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In a nutshell, the subconscious mind automates anything that is done consistently, and once programmed, it becomes part of you.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Without intervention, the brain will remain mostly on autopilot.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How to intervene? First, awareness of this autopilot feature and knowing that you can use it to your advantage. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The second is to prove to yourself that you are able to form new patterns:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Choose one small unwanted habit. Write down exactly what you want to change. Then, describe the improved version and keep track of your daily progress. Review your day every evening. Repeat.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When do you start? ❤🧠

Who among you experiences mental resistance when you decide to learn a new skill, change a habit or implement a new routine?
If you said yes, you’re not alone.
Mental resistance is a totally normal function--but why? Because the brain is in charge of your protection and survival and its resistance is designed to make you avoid the risk of doing unfamiliar things and wasting precious energy.

The mind in the form of the ego contains records of all your past experiences. These files are compilations of information on all the dangerous things that could hurt you and threaten your survival.

But much of this data was recorded at times when you didn’t know you had the option to respond differently. Today you may know better, but your brain is still in the past mode.
Training your mind to overcome mental resistance must be done slowly and carefully, avoiding any overwhelm for the brain, or it will switch into stress mode and prevent you from taking progressive action.

You must prove to your brain that the investment of energy is worthwhile and the outcome will not be a catastrophe.
Give your brain a visual by writing down WHY you want to do the new things that take you out of your comfort zone. The brain must be given a new direction and a clear goal.

Define a big goal: your passion, your new purpose--and make sure it’s what your heart wants, not what other people expect from you. This clarity and distinction is paramount.

Split this big goal into small, digestible milestones so that your brain isn’t overwhelmed. An example could be a small monthly goal that’s in line with your vision.
It’s normal if you feel resistance even with small goals. Give your brain the time needed to learn.

And give your mind the best perspective by feeling the result before it happens--and then do the action no matter what.
This rewires your brain step by step and the resistance will decrease as your brain adapts.

Do you experience mental resistance?
