Last weekend was all about Karate: At the International Kyu Tournament and the Kawasoe Shihan Memorial Cup in Strasswalchen, Austria.
The teams from Germany, Switzerland, and the host nation Austria gave it their all—delivering top-tier and always fair fights! A huge thank you to the Austrian federation SKIAF for their wonderful hospitality and organization! 💪🇩🇪🇨🇭🇦🇹

The Swiss delegation delivered a strong performance on the tatami. The absolute highlight? The sensational victory of our young women's Kumite team (Jana, Arianna, Victoria) on Sunday in the open Elite class! 🏆🔥 Girls, we are incredibly proud of you!

But beyond the medals and trophies, something else took center stage: community. Once again, the tournament was the perfect opportunity to catch up with old friends and forge new connections across borders. 🤝❤️

A massive thank you to the organizers, the SKIAF, the referees and all the athletes for this unforgettable weekend! OSS! 🥋

We bid farewell to Melki Toprak, a 6th Dan black belt and a cornerstone of the Karate Club Locarno.
For decades, he shaped karate in Switzerland with immense discipline, passion, and expertise.
We have lost an exceptional mentor who truly embodied the values of respect and martial arts tradition throughout his life.

R.I.P. Melki Sensei, oss.😥

È con profonda tristezza che salutiamo il nostro presidente, il nostro sensei, il nostro senpai, il nostro amico Melki Toprak.

Melki è stato un pilastro fondamentale del nostro club, per il quale non solo ha ottenuto importanti vittorie nazionali e internazionali nel kumite, ma che ha guidato con la sua conoscenza e passione.

I suoi allenamenti di kumite erano leggendari. Trasmettere le sue abilità ai suoi allievi era qualcosa che faceva con grande dedizione.
Gli dobbiamo moltissimo per i successi dei suoi studenti nel kumite, soprattutto negli ultimi anni.
Lo terremo sempre nei nostri cuori, insieme alla sua passione per il karate, alla sua cordialità e il suo sorriso
Il vuoto che lascia è immenso.

Last weekend, the German Karate Association SKID hosted the International Kyu Tournament on Saturday, followed by the traditional Nagai Cup on Sunday.

Very sad to hear.
R.I.P. Hanshi Asano

29.10.1939 – 19.01.2026

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our father, Hanshi Shiro Asano.

He dedicated his life to spreading the art and discipline of Karate; shaping skilled Karate-ka, instilling spirit, values, and confidence, and leading and building the family of SKIF-GB.

To so many of you, he was more than an instructor; he was a role model, a mentor, a guide, a friend, and someone who stood tall. He brought energy, a sense of humour, humility, and a big heart into every room he entered.

He was larger than life, brave, honest, and always the life and soul of the party; someone who lived fully, laughed loudly, and gave generously. His legacy lives on in the countless personal memories each of you will carry: lessons from the dojo that stayed with you long after training ended, trips away, and conversations shared over a beer and a social after “hard training”.

This is very recent and as such there are no arrangements yet. Our family kindly ask that you respect our privacy at this sad time.

Thank you for being part of his Karate family, which he loved with all his heart. His spirit lives on in every student he taught and every life he has touched over the last 86 years.

We will forever love and miss him. In his own words:

It has been an eventful year. We have all experienced our highs and lows, and may every one of these moments serve as a source of strength for the path ahead.

Now, enjoy this peaceful and reflective time; cherish the moments spent in the company of your family and friends.

We wish you prosperity, health, and great success for the coming year—and, above all, plenty of joy in everything you do.

We are already looking forward to the upcoming events with our SKIF(amily).
