Shirshasana (Headstand) is an advanced yoga posture often called the “king of asanas.” It involves balancing the body upside down on the head and forearms.
Benefits
* Strengthens the shoulders, arms, and core.
* Improves balance and body awareness.
* May enhance circulation by changing body orientation.
* Can help improve focus and concentration.
* Builds confidence with regular, safe practice.
How to Do It
1. Kneel on a yoga mat.
2. Interlace your fingers and place your forearms on the floor, elbows shoulder-width apart.
3. Place the crown of your head lightly on the mat, with the back of your head supported by your hands.
4. Lift your knees and straighten your legs, walking your feet toward your head.
5. Engage your core and slowly lift one knee, then the other, toward your chest.
6. Gradually extend your legs upward until your body forms a straight line.
7. Breathe steadily and hold the pose only as long as you can maintain good alignment.
8. Lower your legs slowly and rest afterward in Child’s Pose (Balasana).
Safety Tips
* Avoid putting most of your weight on your head; distribute it through your forearms and shoulders.
* Practice near a wall if you’re learning.
* Warm up your shoulders and core first.
* Learn under the guidance of a qualified yoga instructor if you’re a beginner.
Avoid Shirshasana If You Have
* Uncontrolled high blood pressure.
* Glaucoma or other serious eye conditions.
* Neck injuries or cervical spine problems.
* Recent head injury.
* Certain heart conditions (unless cleared by a healthcare professional).
