Taming the Beast

Taming the Beast World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall made history with a 500 kg deadlift. After the title, a deeper challenge begins.

Through loss, rivalry, and self-doubt, Eddie learns that true strength is not just what you lift, but who you become. Eddie Hall is the World’s Strongest Man, a record-breaking athlete who deadlifted 500 kg and rose to global fame through sheer force of will. But after winning the World’s Strongest Man title in 2017, the victory leaves him unexpectedly hollow. Back home in Stoke-on-Trent, Eddie battles depression, uncertain who he is when strength is no longer enough. Inspired by his childhood hero Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eddie travels to Graz, Austria, and later to the Arnold Classic in Ohio, chasing a new direction when winning no longer feels enough. But outside the arena, the question becomes unavoidable: who is Eddie Hall when he’s not the strongest man in the world? When his long-time rival Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson breaks Eddie’s 500 kg deadlift record at his Thor's Power Gym in 2020 and publicly challenges his legacy, their friendship fractures into a bitter feud. Accusations, media scrutiny, and wounded pride spiral towards a grudge match in Dubai, giving Eddie one final chance to defend his name, redefine himself, and fight for his future.

Following our world premiere in Basel, Taming the Beast travelled to Altes Kino Vaduz for a very special premiere screening.

Athletes. Artists. Musicians. Entrepreneurs. Filmmakers. Representatives of the Liechtenstein government and the Liechtenstein Media Fund. And people who had never followed strongman competition in their lives.

Yet once the lights went down, everyone was watching the same human story.

The victories impressed—but it was Eddie Hall - The Beast’s vulnerability, his family, his struggles with mental health, and the question of what happens after you finally achieve the dream you sacrificed everything for that seemed to resonate most.

The evening ended with a wonderful Q&A with Director Josias Tschanz and Lead Executive Producer Guido Baechler—covering everything from our almost decade-long production journey and the COVID years to mental health, filmmaking and even a hilarious behind-the-scenes encounter with Liechtenstein’s own DJ Alan.

Vaduz reminded us once again:

You don’t have to be a strongman fan to understand Taming the Beast. You just have to be human.

Thank you, Vaduz. ❤️🇱🇮

The credits were still rolling. Then Eddie Hall - The Beast appeared live on screen from England.

After experiencing more than two hours of Taming the Beast, the audience at our world premiere in Basel had the chance to speak directly with the man whose life they had just watched unfold.

What followed was an honest and deeply personal conversation.

Eddie spoke openly about the years after becoming World's Strongest Man, the mental health struggles behind the public image, therapy and meditation, the importance of self-belief—and how fatherhood and family have changed what success means to him today.

No editing. No second takes. No publicity script.

Just Eddie.

It was the perfect way to close an unforgettable world premiere—and a reminder that while the documentary may be finished, the conversation it started is only beginning.

For Taming the Beast that story spans nine years of filming, countless hours of footage, and a shared commitment to telling Eddie Hall - The Beast's journey with honesty and authenticity. The film was shot across multiple countries over nearly a decade, following Eddie far beyond his World's Strongest Man victory to explore the psychological cost of extreme achievement.

In this exclusive interview, Director Josias Tschanz and Executive Producer Guido Baechler reflect on the creative process, the challenges of bringing such a personal story to the screen, and why Taming the Beast became much more than a sports documentary.

What if your greatest opponent isn't standing across from you?

For Eddie Hall - The Beast, becoming the World's Strongest Man wasn't the end of the journey—it was the beginning of a much deeper battle.

Taming the Beast explores the conflict that so many people face but rarely talk about: the struggle with identity, purpose, and the expectations we place on ourselves. It's a story that goes far beyond strength sports, asking what happens when the toughest challenge comes from within. The film follows Eddie's journey after his 2017 World's Strongest Man victory as he confronts the psychological cost of extreme achievement and redefines what strength really means.

"I'm glad my next film is fictional."

After spending years immersed in Eddie Hall's journey, director Josias Tschanz understands better than most what it means to tell a real story.

In this candid interview, he reflects on the challenges of documenting a life as it unfolds, shaping years of footage into a meaningful narrative, and why Taming the Beast became so much more than a film about strength. He also shares why, after this extraordinary experience, he's looking forward to returning to the world of fiction.

What happens when you finally achieve the dream you've sacrificed everything for?

For Eddie Hall - The Beast, becoming the World's Strongest Man wasn't the end of the story.

In a powerful conversation with Kai Greene and Edwin Mejia at Generation Iron, Eddie opens up about the reality behind the public image—the pressure, depression, family, fatherhood, life after success, and the challenge of controlling the intensity that helped make him "The Beast."

He also reflects on his son Maximus, what he hopes to pass on to the next generation, and what "Taming the Beast" really means to him.

It's an honest conversation that goes far beyond strength—and gets to the heart of why this documentary was made.
