🌱 Aiming for a greener future

IOC Young Leader 2025–2028 Eduardo Oliveira 🇵🇹 is using sport as a tool to promote sustainability, healthier lifestyles and positive environmental action through his initiative, Aim Green.

🤝 Recently, Eduardo delivered an important milestone for Aim Green at the 5th Beach Sports Meeting in Peniche, Portugal, introducing Laser Run to approximately 250 participants and conducting the project’s first successful upcycling tests, transforming collected plastic bottle caps into custom keychains.

🌍 Eduardo also represented UIPM at the ASOIF Sustainability Workshop in Lausanne, Switzerland, joining International Federations from across the Olympic Movement to exchange ideas and explore how sport can contribute to a more sustainable future.

✨ Key reflections from these experiences included:

🌱 Sustainability is strongest when communities and organisations work together.

🤝 Sport can bring people of different ages and backgrounds together around a shared purpose.

♻️ Small environmental actions can inspire lasting behavioural change.

🏃 Physical activity can be a powerful tool for community engagement and environmental awareness.

💡 Through Aim Green, Eduardo continues to demonstrate how sport can help create healthier communities while encouraging greater environmental responsibility.

🏃‍♂️ Juega Bien: Using sport to prevent bullying

Rafael Valdivieso, IOC Young Leader 2025–2028 from the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴, recently launched Juega Bien, an initiative that uses sport and physical activity to prevent bullying and promote respect, inclusion and positive coexistence in schools.

💡 With the support of the IOC Young Leaders Programme, Rafael is bringing Juega Bien to life and turning physical education into a space where young people can learn, connect and grow.

✨ “Sport is one of the most powerful tools we have to educate, unite and transform our communities.”

⚽ Through games, movement and interactive challenges, students learn about respect, inclusion and healthy coexistence while staying active, taking action and having fun.

🤝 Inspired by the belief that nobody should be left out of the game, Juega Bien is helping create safer and more welcoming school environments for everyone.

🚀 This is just the beginning.

🌊 Protecting our ocean through sport

This World Ocean Day, we are highlighting the journey of IOC Young Leader alumnus Nicolò Di Tullio 🇮🇹 and his commitment to connecting sport, sustainability and community action through his project, GotTo.

🏄 Recently, Nicolò supported the arrival of Merijn Tinga, known as the “Plastic Soup Surfer”, in his hometown of Genoa, Italy. Travelling exclusively by windsurf and stand-up paddleboard, Merijn’s journey demonstrated how sport can transform environmental advocacy into public participation and bring global sustainability challenges into local communities. This challenge is particularly relevant for the Tyrrhenian Sea, where high concentrations of microplastics continue to pose a significant threat to coastal ecosystems and communities.

🌍 For Nicolò, the experience reinforced several important lessons: that environmental action is strongest when communities are actively involved; that sport can help connect citizens, researchers and institutions around shared goals; and that lasting change depends on collaboration, participation and collective responsibility.

🤝 Through GotTo, Nicolò continues to use sport to promote environmental awareness, scientific research and community participation.

🏀 Creating opportunities beyond the court

After experiencing first-hand how sport can change lives, IOC Young Leader alumna Layana de Souza 🇧🇷 continues to give back through Mudando o Placar, creating opportunities for children and young people in Rocinha, Brazil.

✨ What began as a belief in the power of basketball has grown into a broader commitment to education, wellbeing and community development, helping young people access opportunities, build confidence and discover their potential.

🙌 As a woman born and raised in the community, Layana is particularly passionate about inspiring more girls and young women to see sport as a space where they belong, can grow and can lead.

🌍 Today, her work continues to connect sport with social impact, sustainability and inclusion, while helping strengthen the role of sport as a force for positive change in Brazil.

Her journey is a reminder that when opportunities are shared, their impact can reach far beyond the court.

🌍 Creating impact through sport, inclusion and community

IOC Young Leader 2023–2026 Joseph Owino 🇰🇪 is using sport to create more inclusive opportunities for young people through his initiative Inclusion Agenda, bringing students with and without disabilities together through shared sporting experiences and community participation.

🤝 Recently, he hosted the Para-Sports Fiesta Central Edition in Kenya, bringing together four teams from different campuses through sitting volleyball, goalball, chess, scrabble and darts. The event created opportunities for students with physical disabilities, visual impairments and deaf participants to connect, participate and share experiences alongside colleagues without disabilities.

✨ Through Inclusion Agenda, Joseph continues to highlight how sport can help strengthen accessibility, encourage more inclusive educational environments and bring communities together through shared experiences.

📬 Joseph’s journey is one of the many inspiring stories featured in the IOC Young Leaders in Action newsletter.

🎓 Scaling social impact with intention: What does it mean to scale a project? How do you grow your impact?

In a recent expert session of the IOC Young Leaders Programme, participants explored Scaling Social Impact: Opportunities, Trade-offs & Realities, delivered by Dr. Hilary King, Director of Strategic Governance at CARE.

The session challenged common assumptions around scaling, encouraging IOC Young Leaders to reflect on what it really means to scale social impact, and why “bigger” isn’t always better.

Drawing on examples from community development, food systems and global development, the session explored how impact can grow through replication, specialization, collaboration, coordination and systems change, beyond simply increasing numbers, reach or visibility.

💡 Key reflections from the session:
🌍 Scaling isn’t one thing, and it’s not always about growth.
🧩 Sustainable solutions are often simple, adaptable and grounded in local realities.
🤝 Lasting scale happens through systems, institutions and collaboration.
🌱 Meaningful social change happens through ecosystems of people and organisations working together.

Through practical frameworks, case studies and discussion, IOC Young Leaders reflected on how change spreads, who carries it forward and what trade-offs scaling requires.
