Day 5 of pre season ski training today. today.

Normally I would be in the gym again, but after yesterdays 11 hour drive back to the U.K. from Switzerland I’m feeling a bit stiff so it’s time for a recovery day.

Today I’m going for a long walk followed by a 1 hour yoga session.

The walk is going to be about 4 miles/6km or one hour at a brisk pace.
Yoga is the same session we did on Sunday. Plus another one for neck and shoulders.

I’m doing this one because I’m still getting pain in my shoulders after breaking my elbow and not using my arm properly for two months.

If you have any little niggles anywhere in your body. Attend to them first before you go too hard on other forms of training. Not doing so is just an injury waiting to happen. Yoga or Pilates are both excellent ways to injury prod your body.

It’s pre season ski fit day #4 and it’s a repeat of day 2, legs and core.
Actually it’s a little bit of poetic licence,
because I’m driving from Switzerland to England today, but this is what I should be doing. Don’t worry, I’m going to double up tomorrow.

Warm up 5 mins row bike or speedwalk/jog
1. Twisting forward lunge
2. Walking barbell lunge 3x20
3. Barbell Squat 3x10
4. Romanian/Straight leg deadlift 3x10
5. Reverse ab crunch 3x10
6. Diagonal v sit ups. 3x10

This workout targets what is called the posterior chain, specifically, the glutes and hamstrings. These muscles are critical in skiing. They will not only help you ski better but will help to protect your knees.

We will be doing the same workout on Friday.

After yesterday‘s leg session, my bum cheeks are complaining really loudly but there’s no time to waste. It’s cardio day today.

Cardio for skiing isn’t the biggest priority as skiing isn’t really a cardiovascular sport. I normally use interval training to achieve the most sport specific results.

The idea is to work intensely for short periods of time and then recover. This places a similar demand on our body to skiing. If you have any heart problems or have high blood pressure, take professional advice before setting your levels. Interval training is suitable for most people, but the intensity may need to be reduced slightly if you’re fit young and healthy, go all in.

Here is todays session.

Row,
20 minutes.
5 mins warm up
1 Minute fast row
1 Minute easy row recovery
Repeat 6 times.
For the last 3 minutes
1 minute moderate,
1 minute easy
1 minute slow.

Walk
Alternate on treadmill
3 mins flat
3 mins full elevation.
Repeat 3 times.
Finish 2 mins flat.

Full body stretches 10 minutes.

It’s pre season ski fit day #2. You can keep following the full programme on Raising Aspirations Through Sport - RATS.
There will be lots of advice on all around ski fitness, injury prevention, nutrition and other types of preparation for your winter sports. It will help you massively, even if you don’t ski. Gym access is helpful but you can adapt if you’re not a gym goer.

As it’s early in the programme we’re taking it easy. At this point, the weights are light. You can even just use your body weight. What’s important is good technique and controlled movements.

Today is legs and core
Warm up 5 mins row bike or speedwalk jog
