Been a while since I got to post something but just sharing a bit of an update. So my running season has got off to a good start. First goal of the year was to complete the Tokyo Marathon and claim my 6 ⭐️ major medal. Tokyo is an incredible city I would recommend anyone to visit. Such great people, food, and culture to experience. Alas my visit was short but successful. Managed to finish in a PB of 2:35 and claim my final major of the series. It also qualified me for the 2024 Abbott Age World Championships, which a great bonus!

With such a challenging 2022 due to injuries I have really focused on getting the basics right. Good nutrition and listening better to my body have been key principles for me this year. Building a strong base and better and more consistent integration of strength training into my program has really paid off. The injuries have not completely cleared but I am managing them much better (thanks to a great physiotherapist).

You don’t succeed in a day, and being realistic about your goals while not being afraid to push yourself is important. If you truly believe in yourself and commit to your goal I believe anything is possible.

Now it’s off the road and onto the trails for the big project of the year, the UTMB Mont-Blanc in September. First I will be aiming for La Sportiva Lavaredo Ultra Trail by UTMB in June so really excited about that.

Hope you are enjoying your running, biking, or whatever puts a smile on your face!

Taking in the sea air and a little bit of paradise on this morning’s long run. Sometimes you stumble upon a path that takes your breath away. What a way to start a Saturday. It’s good sometimes to go out and explore a bit on your runs, you just never know what’s round the corner.

4 weeks till I kick the 2023 season off with the Tokyo marathon and getting a bit of cross training in today on the bike with Mount Fuji aptly on the horizon. Have been integrating cross training into my training for the past year and it really is a great way to mix things up. Great way to start the day! 🚴🗻🇯🇵

Out on the trails yesterday. While I still enjoy the roads, there is just something that but more special on the trails. Also a great way to test yourself and mix up some varying terrain, which is always good for your running progression. We often get fixated with pace but a lot can be said for just running by how you feel. Trails definitely allow me to disconnect a bit and get some real mental recovery from day to day life. So if you run why not give the trails a try, you may just surprise yourself 🏃🏃‍♀️🌳🍂

A chilly day on the trails! Needed a break from the road and it was really worth it. First time running alone the Rhône river in almost two years, still as beautiful! 🏃🥶

What an end to a rollercoaster of a year. From not knowing if I would race in 2022 at all to the ups and downs of injury management during the year, I managed to finish 2022 by claiming a new PB at the Maratona Di Reggio Emilia last weekend. Great atmosphere and group of runners and to be again representing Glenmore AC. Gave it my all and clocked in at 2:37:36! 🥳🏃🏅🍺 It showed me that if you get the right advice and manage your goals and expectations you can achieve great things. Putting a good team together around you is key. Like in life the best laid plans likely never turn out as you expect them to, but you learn to adapt and find a new path. 2022, despite the disappointments has given me my greatest achievements and happiness in running. As my father would tell me, realise your potential. I hope that I am on my way to doing just that! So many people to thank, especially James for getting my body back able to race, and family and friends for their support, and Ian Sharman Ultrarunner Sharman Ultra Runners Group for his invaluable advice. Time to put the feet up and start planning for 2023. Some big goals on the horizon!

Today I was meant to be on the start line in Courmayeur to race the UTMB Mont-Blanc CCC 100k trail race. Unfortunately injury has got in the way of that becoming a reality. It is never easy having to miss out on a race, especially one as special as the UTMB CCC. However, if there is one thing I have learnt over the past 12 months with injuries is that you have to listen to your body, and my body just said a big NO! Am I disappointed, even a bit gutted, yes I certainly am, but sometimes things just are not meant to be. I have been so fortunate to have ran two races this summer (photos attached!), and getting to realise my dream of running a 100km race (Mozart100 in Salzburg) which was very VERY special. However, my feet were not so impressed with me for a few days after. I also got ring the bell at the end of the UTMB Val d'Aran 55k race in the Pyrenees which was both epic and brutal, and tested me both mentally and physically. I have a lot to be grateful for and I know I will be back, and one day I will be on that start line of the UTMB in Chamonix! Until then I hope to be able to able to get back on those trails and do what I love. Endurance running is never all smiles, but this summer has given me some incredible moments. While I won't be running this weekend I will be putting my feet up and watching the 1000's of incredible athletes running the UTMB races in Chamonix and cheering them on. 🏃🏔🏃

Been a while coming but finally took the next step in my injury recovery and took on my first trail run in over 3 months! I have really missed this! There is something special about being up running in the hills. My Achilles has not reacted too badly to the experience so hope to be back up in the hills in a few days. Don’t want to over do it. Special day with some amazing weather, 23km and 900m of accent 🏃🏔☀️

So I am now finally settling in after my move from Bangkok back to my homeland of Ireland. A bit of a climate shock, that’s for sure! Also finally starting to get some longer runs in following my calf/Achilles injury. So happy to get my longest run in some months in today. Step by step! Injury recovery can be such a frustrating and long road back but I have learnt that if you get good physio advice and be patient with your recovery you can over come these challenges and look towards getting back on the trail. When I got injured I tried to rush my return and didn’t get professional advice. I relied too much on internet articles and posts instead of a proper recovery program. It set me back weeks. Once I realised that it wasn’t working I got professional advice and stuck to that plan. There is always hope! 🏃🥶🏃
