Are you pushing your athletes… or overtraining them?

Overtraining doesn’t just affect performance, it affects how the body controls movement. Stability drops, coordination slips, and the risk of injury rises.
That’s where cross training comes in.

It’s not a compromise, it’s a strategy 🔁

When one system is fatigued, you can shift the focus and keep progressing without digging a deeper hole.

Instead of stopping completely, try:🔹 Mobility and range work to restore movement quality🔹 Low-impact cardio (cycling, swimming) to maintain fitness🔹 Fascia and recovery-based training to support tissue health🔹 Skill-based drills at lower intensity to reinforce technique

Different inputs build a more adaptable body. And adaptable bodies perform better.

🧠 Coach tip: The goal isn’t always to do more, it’s to do what the body needs today. Learning to adjust sessions, rather than push blindly, is what separates good coaching from great coaching.

🧱 PLANKING TIPS YOU NEED TO KNOW 💪✨

Struggling to hold a plank? It’s often not about strength alone — it’s about positioning and activation.

👉 Here’s what to focus on:
🫁 Lengthen: Reach the crown of the head forward and the heels back to create a long, active spine.
🫸 Activate: Press the elbows out and down to fire up the shoulders and triceps.
🧠 Lift away: Think of pushing the floor away with your head and elbows to build tension through the whole body.

This creates full-body connection, making your plank stronger, more stable, and more efficient ⚡️

📣 Coach tip: Start from the ground up — hands and knees first — then progress to full plank. Solid foundations lead to stronger positions and longer holds.

Finding the Sweet Spot for Performance

The Inverted-U Theory illustrates the relationship between pressure and performance. This means that performance increases with arousal (or pressure) up to a certain point 📈, after which further increases in arousal lead to a decline in performance 📉

📋 What this means for coaches: People need to be “switched on,” but not overstimulated, to perform at their best.

🔻 On the low end (hypoarousal): Participants might seem flat, unfocused, unmotivated, or 'sloppy'. You might notice slow reactions, low body tension, or disengaged energy.

🔺 On the high end (hyperarousal): They might be overly tense, jittery, rushing through skills, or struggling to listen to instructions or follow cues.

⚖️ As a coach, you can spot these signs and help regulate the group’s state:
🥱 If they’re under-aroused: try energising the session with quick reactive drills, upbeat music, or competition-style stakes.
🫨 If they’re overstimulated: slow things down, simplify tasks, build in breathing or grounding moments, and reduce external noise. Remind them that they're here because they want to be!
📚 This isn’t just for match day—it applies to every training session. Helping participants find their sweet spot is a skill that sets great coaches apart from those just going through the motions.

🫁 Breathing is movement. And it’s the first skill we all learn.

But in sport? It’s often the first thing we forget 🤦‍♂️

Shallow breathing, holding our breath, or out-of-sync breathing can reduce power, limit range, and put our nervous systems on high alert. 🚨 Whether you're stretching, lifting, sprinting or recovering, your breath influences muscle tension, coordination, stability, and nervous system tone.

☝️ Try this while stretching or foam rolling:
➡️ Inhale through your nose to create space and length through the ribs and spine.
➡️ Then exhale slowly through your mouth, using your breath to release tension and deepen into position.
➡️ The breath cues the body to relax, not resist.

These visuals break down the key mechanics, so you can coach breathing as clearly as you do a squat or sprint 🏃🏽‍♂️‍➡️ 🧠

Understanding the mechanics of breathing can help you coach better posture, guide movement more effectively, and support more efficient training 💪

🏃‍♀️ Growth doesn’t happen without movement..... not just of the body, but of the mindset 🧠

When learning a new skill, we have to step out of the Comfort Zone🚶🏽‍♂️‍➡️and pass through the Fear Zone 🏃🏽‍♂️‍➡️ before we hit our stride in the Learning Zone 🧘🏾. That’s where confidence builds and new abilities start to stick.

💡 Eventually, we reach the Growth Zone, where we apply what we’ve learned and level up 🤸🏾

This journey takes time and consistency. That’s where functional training becomes essential. By building physical competence and awareness, we support not just performance but the confidence and mindset to keep progressing 💪

Coaches who understand this don’t just teach better technique; they help athletes navigate challenge, fear and growth with greater clarity and care 🫱🏼‍🫲🏾

⏱️ Does more time spent on a skill guarantee better results?
➡️ Only if that time is meaningful.

🔟 hours of intentional, technically correct training will always outperform 💯 hours of careless repetition. Poor patterns don’t just stall progress, they create unwanted adaptations that take 5x longer to undo.

✅ Quality over quantity isn’t just a saying—it’s sports science!

Want more strength, control, and explosive power? Start here 📍

A strong Athletic Stance is your launchpad for movement—jumping, cutting, tumbling, defending—nearly every sport skill starts with this shape.

✅ Head up, back straight
✅ Hips back, shins nearly vertical
✅ Shoulders, knees, and ankles stacked

This position loads your glutes, lats, and quads—three of the biggest drivers of strength and power.

Common mistakes to watch for:
🚩 Knees drifting forward → Sit back like you're finding a stool
🚩 Lower back arching → Lightly engage your abs
🚩 Eyes on the floor → Look slightly ahead to keep your spine aligned

💡How hard should you really be training?

Not every session should be maximum effort—and in fact, it shouldn’t be.

Understanding your training zones helps you match effort with goals:

✅ 4–5 = Health (long, easy sessions)
✅ 6–7 = Fitness (moderate, sustainable work)
✅ 8–10 = Performance (short, intense bursts)

💥 The Borg RPE Scale (Rate of Perceived Exertion) is a simple tool to gauge intensity based on how your body feels—not just your heart rate or smart watch stats.

👉🏼 Smart programming means knowing when to push—and when to hold back 👌🏼

📲 Save this for session planning or explaining intensity to your athletes
