Kagami Biraki marks the opening of the New Year and the renewal of our training spirit. Following Japanese tradition, we began our New Year training in a mindful and respectful way. Rather than focusing on strength or intensity, it was especially important for us to practice with calm and inner stillness. This quiet approach allowed us to reflect on the past year, set our intentions for the year ahead, and reconnect with the deeper meaning of our practice. Kagami Biraki reminds us that true progress begins with a clear mind, calm awareness, and a respectful heart. 🧘‍♂️

Kagami Biraki – Traditional New Year Practice 🎍🥋

Kagami Biraki (鏡開き), meaning “opening the mirror,” is a traditional Japanese New Year ceremony. It symbolizes a fresh beginning, gratitude for the past year, and the intention to move forward with a clear mind and renewed spirit. In Japanese martial arts, Kagami Biraki is a moment of reflection, recommitment, and unity within the dojo.

To honor this tradition, our Aikido school will hold a special Kagami Biraki training session. As part of this practice, it is customary to perform one technique 108 times. The number 108 has deep symbolic meaning in Japanese culture and Buddhism, representing the release of worldly distractions and the purification of mind and body at the start of the new year 🧘‍♂️✨

For this training, we are also looking for one person who will set the rhythm and count, helping the group maintain focus, timing, and a shared flow throughout the practice.

We warmly invite all students, regardless of rank or experience, to join us in starting the new year together on the mat woth this event 🤝.

However first class will be held on January 5th. 😉

Kind regards
Jan and Nora

Dear Aikido Friends,

As we slowly begin to think about our plans and ideas for the year 2026, we would like to take a moment to look back at the past year together.

Last weekend, we had a wonderful seminar including examinations, followed by a lovely Christmas celebration. It was a special event filled with training, focus, success, and great moments of togetherness.

A student tooked fotos during the weekend, and I have now created a short video using these images, which we would like to share with you. Let’s use this as an opportunity to reflect on an intense, eventful, and very positive year for our Aikido club.

One of the highlights of the year was our seminar with Christophe Depaus, whom we are very happy to invite every year. His teaching and inspiration continue to be a valuable part of our club’s development.

We also greatly enjoyed the exchange and training with Aikido Bad Säckingen as well as the Aikido Schule Zürich. These connections and shared experiences were enriching and strengthened our sense of community beyond our own dojo.

In addition, we became part of the Aiki-Matrix, which allows individual techniques to be reviewed and studied directly. This has proven to be a valuable tool, especially in supporting our students’ preparation for examinations.

Thank you all for your dedication, progress, and the great spirit you bring to the dojo. We are already looking forward to what the future holds for us.

Best regards,
Jan and Nora
